I watched Oprah the other day, and she has a program where people can sign up for her "Debt Diet", and get help in cutting their costs & getting out of debt, with professional counselors helping. She showcased 2 families the other day; 1 with 2 teenaged daughters & the other with a pre-teen girl, and their wastefulness was absolutely mindboggling .. as they knowingly went deeper & deeper into debt. One of the near-retirement couples getting a "makeover" in a recent Money magazine issue was similar, taking vacations & dining out, when they should have been growing their nest egg more!
Families that eat out or get take-out 3 meals a day, all week. Parents that never check their children's rooms or closets, before forking over money (or giving them credit cards) for them to buy more clothes. Families that never make a grocery list, and buy whatever strikes their fancy, without any thought to whether they can cover those expenditures with their normal household income.
Are these the worst cases that make for good TV or magazine articles, or do you actually know people who are that clueless & in mega-debt due to personal irresponsibility?
