I wish you would link us to the research that leads you to those conclusions. However, even if insufficient on its own, reverting to the marginal rates that we had when our middleclass was thriving, would certainly be going in the right direction for both the revenue and inequality problems.
I believe that federal tax reform has to include consideration of our federal payroll taxes too. Maybe they should be a deduction over and above a standard deduction.
It's not just coincidence that we're in a 2nd Gilded Age after the many tax cuts that occurred, primarily benefiting the wealthy. Confiscatory tax rates at high compensation levels may influence some of our CEO's to stop raiding their corporations and leaving so little for other workers.
Just looked at my 1967 return and, for a middleclass couple not yet earning our peak, those income tax rates were pretty high.
