During the late seventies, my oldest daughter and about a dozen of her classmates, as an extra credit project for their high school American government class wrote a series of survey questions that dealt with current "hot button" political and social issues.
They then proceeded to ask members of various groups of their peers, and also surveyed area residents in areas known to be primarily of one or another demographic group and political persuasion.
They kept the answers from each group separate in order to demonstrate that by carefully manipulating which groups were asked, as well as by carefully selecting what time of day the survey was done in the same location, the survey results could be adroitly manipulated to get an entirely different result.
Yeah, I suggested the project to them when they were stuck for a project, as well as suggested that by asking the same questions of different demographic groups, they could easily get different results, and merely observed that most polling groups were controlled to some extent by their funding sources. They got an "A", and when the results of the project became publicised by a local wrongwingnut ranter, there were suggestions that varied from recommending them for a Governor's award to demands that they be expelled and prosecuted, although the specifics of what they should be prosecuted for were never supported by laws actually on the books..
Surveys are notoriously subject to manipulation by - those writing the questions(see push poll), selecting the survey methods, and persons surveyed, doing the survey as well as those interpreting the raw survey results.
Of the multiple polling companies some are known to not be in the slightest averse to manipulating the poll to favor one or another politically and/or culturally biased position.
PS - No, I'm not that old, I'm a boomer. In '77 foster parented and later adopted two then pregnant teenaged girls (13 + 14) who were both allegedly delinquent, and uncontrollable. They were nothing of the sort. They were both high IQ kids with strongly assertive personalities who talked back and fought back if they believed they were not being treated fairly. They were considered delinquent because the oldest kneed an ultra right wing lay preacher in the crotch when he tried to physically discipline her for telling him loudly in public that she was certain he was an idiot, and when he tried to get up, the younger one kicked him repeatedly in the abdomen until he stopped trying to get up.. They asked a bystander to call the cops, tied him up with their shoestrings, and insisted on preferring charges. Just my kind of way uppity talk back right in your face young feminazis. Their position and credibility with their peers rose considerably when it became known that a 5'4" pregnant 14 year-old middle school girl and a pregnant thirteen year old took down and tied up a 6'1" former Marine. I never once had any discipline issues with either one of them. Both of their daughters are just like their mothers. How much good luck can one have?
