“The current law in Oregon allows for anybody to concealed carry on school grounds,” [School Board chairman Marshall Porter] said. “To exclude our staff seems like they’re being punished. They should have a right to protect themselves if they so choose.”
Based on feedback from the school board, the feedback from parents has been mostly positive, with only 1 parent writing to express their displeasure at the decision.
The school board voted 4-1 in favor of removing the ban on staff members carrying firearms.
Since the shootings in Newtown, CT last year, multiple school districts across the country have decided that the best way to protect children is by allowing staff members to defend themselves and their children.
Some other school districts have responded by increasing the number of armed guards at the schools.
