So.... AARP lumps belief in the paranormal with Cults???
They are related how?
In no way whatsoever!
Paranomal is ghosts and such. Cults are groups headed by evil, charismtic leaders who convince their followers to obey them and give up all the worldly goods.
Yeesh, gimme a break!
I think whoever created the name for the topic (i.e., "Paranormal & Cults") may have confused "cult" with "occult". People who know nothing about either often confuse the two. Of course, even when they use the word "occult" they usually associate it with adjectives like "evil", "satanic", etc. when it really just means "hidden" or "veiled".
Even the early Christians used the symbol of the fish to identify each other so they wouldn't be persecuted. In that sense, then, they were engaging in an "occult" practice in that they were "hiding" their religious affiliation to protect themselves. Only those "in the know" (or other "initiates") would recognize the meaning of that symbol.
In fact, the meaning of the fish symbol went even deeper than simply an identification with the controversial figure of Jesus the Christ. The shape of the fish (like we see now stuck onto the back of automobiles! LOL) is symbolic of the geometry of the Vesica Piscis which, in turn, has its own esoteric meaning behind it.
An excellent article about this is posted here:
