Anna, What a wonderful idea you have. I work a desk on Tuesdays in out patient surgery. This job is keeping up with the patients who go to surgery, assigning the family members a waiting room ,calling the family when OR or recovery wants to speak with them. I call the family member out to speak to the doctor when he comes out. I love getting to know the doctors and observing their personalities. Many of them grow flowers as their therapy. This means that we have beautiful flowers on the desk most of the time. Very rewarding job. On Thurs. I work in the rooms where patients who have had surgery are waiting until they are dismissed. I take them down in a wheel chair. The beds must be stripped, sprayed and remade. It is a very physical job, but also rewarding. I am so impressed with the nurses. I love working with the children. The children get to wear a crown when they leave and the nurses make them feel so loved. The problem that I am having with this part of my work is an allergic reaction to the spray. I'm trying to find a way around this, but will most likely have to be placed somewhere else. I love the physical demands and love working that closely with patients.
I have one gentle, bobtail cat that I have thought about putting in a harness and taking to the local nursing homes. Perhaps, will try. I don't have a dog.
I hope that you do consider volunteering. It is the most rewarding thing that I have done in some time.
