Thank you for being a member of the Association of the Miraculous Medal.
You might ask why I am beginning my letter with a thank you. It is because 46 years ago I was ordained a Vincentian priest, a blessing made possible through the generosity of Association members like you. Father Charles Rice, then Director of the Association of the Miraculous Medal, wrote that the newly ordained class of 1966 “owed much to the friends and benefactors of the Association.” We certainly did, and I have never forgotten this. You have had a special place in my Masses and prayers over the years. And so my thanks goes to you, and the many Association members whose footsteps have paved the way for me to the priesthood and to the important work of our Lady’s Association.
After my ordination on May 28, 1966, I taught in seminaries and high schools for six years, and ministered at parishes for 19 years. For the past 21 years, I have been Director of Catholic Home Study Service, a program offering free correspondence courses on the Catholic Faith, and I preach parish missions throughout the United States. Now I have been asked by my Provincial Superior, Father Perry Henry, to serve as Spiritual Director of the Association. I am honored to do so because it is an opportunity to thank our Blessed Mother and the members of the Association of the Miraculous Medal for all the blessings that have come to me through Mary’s intercession and your kindness.
As Spiritual Director, I will be writing to you about matters that concern the Association, and I will do my best to help you grow in love of Jesus and Mary. You can read my weekly Gospel Reflections on our web site. And I’ll do everything possible to promote the Association’s ministry bringing the graces offered to the world through our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
Our Lady has been an important part of my life since I was baptized at her Miraculous Medal Shrine here in Perryville 73 years ago. I received my first Holy Communion here. As a seminarian I frequently prayed at our Lady’s Shrine. Through the years since my ordination, I have had the privilege of celebrating Mass at the Shrine thousands of times, and I look forward to saying Mass for you and your intentions at the Shrine Altar in the years ahead. So again, I thank you for your continued support of and membership in the Association.
May our Lady keep you in her loving care. You ARE in my prayers. Please pray for me.
In the Love of Jesus and Mary,
Fr. Oscar Lukefahr, C.M.
