The title, “Our Lady of Sorrows,” focuses on Mary’s intense suffering and grief during the passion and death of our Lord. This title also includes the "" of Mary. The first of these was the prophecy of Simeon when Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple. Simeon said that Jesus would be "a sign that will be opposed." He then told Mary: "...a sword will pierce your own soul too." (Luke 2:34-35) That’s why, on the Miraculous Medal, Mary’s heart is depicted as pierced by a sword, reminding us of how much Mary suffered for our sake.
When you experience the loss of a loved one, a grave illness, unemployment, or some other form of suffering, Mary understands what you are going through. At such times, we should pray for the grace that strengthened Mary through all her sorrows. In her company we can trust that God is with us in times of sorrow and pain.
A novena dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows begins at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal on September 7 and continues until the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. We will remember you and your intentions in each Mass offered at our Lady’s Shrine during the novena. Please send me yourso I can place them at the Shrine Altar. If you would like to have a burn at our Lady’s Shrine, please let me know.
May our Lady’s prayers obtain for you the courage, love, and trust she showed in times of sorrow. I remember you and your loved ones in my Masses and prayers offered here at our Lady’s Shrine. Please pray for me and for all of the members of the Association.
Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary,
