As members of AARP since 1993, my wife and I would like to warn fellow seniors of the failure of the Hartford Insurance Company ( an AARP recommended insurer) to honor its contractual automobile insurance policy terms. In December 2008 my wife and I were insured in a motor vehicle accident. The accident was reported to the Hartford the day of the accident and a police report prepared at the time of the accident. The other driver was at fault for the accident.
As a result of the accident my wife required two rotator cuff surgeries and a hospitalization for a stomach bleed incidental to the first rotator cuff surgery.
I required three cervical surgeries resulting from the accident. Both of us required physical therapy for an extended period the surgeries.
The Hartford was notified of our medical treatment, requests for a copy of the automobile policy and coverage limits in effect at the time of the accident were made in writing on numberous occasions by our legal counsel. The Hartford failed to provide the requested information and honor the underinsured motorist provisions of the policy. Both my wife and i incurred over $200,000 in medical treatments each. The Hartford then denied that it had notice of an underinsured motorist claim and has refused to pay those benefits under the policy.
