I'm asking for help and hints.  Recently I was informed by my supervisor that I am no longer promotable because I won't commit to long term employment with future advancement.  I'm 67 and know that to commitment would be ridiculous.  I also know the position (for which I am very well qualified) would be much easier that the position I'm in now.  I am a manager where I'm employed at but as past of my job I do tremendous heavy lifting and know I can't do it much longer.  I lift heavier boxes, etc. than most of my younger staff but at my age and being a woman who weighs 106 lbs, my body can't take too much more of this.  Instead of looking at the situation and getting really upset I started to think about many things I want and have wanted to do with my life.  After a couple of days I realized how freeing the rejection has been.  It's a blessing in disquise.

One of my life long dreams has been to be a writer.  I've been published in some minor ways and will start to seek out opportunities.  I've always wanted to be a journalist.  I realize that the world has changed from the day I first entered college and was told not to go into the field unless I wanted to write the womens' society page and do obits.

Thankfully the world is different and the opportunies are greater.  I also have to supplement my SS.  I'm asking for comments from others who have experienced the same things or is now turning to writing to supplement their income, to share their thoughts.  Even if you don't share my desires please feel free to share your wisdom and thoughts.  I'd love to hear from others and have learned to appreciate the value in everyone.  I truly believe that we, as humans, each have wisdom to share.  Thank you!

The most important thing is to stay busy.  If you find someplace you are needed even if on a volunteer level, you may
find something new and profitable.  I started with RSVP.  They have many volunteer situations and you will meet new
people besides being a help to society.

I am a few years younger than CarolJean89, but as of March of 2011, my 30 year career ended. I knew it was coming, so I tried to plan for it. I wanted to do something different, and I wanted to further my education -- at age 55. I have an Associate Degree, but wanted a Bachelor of Arts Degree. I went back to school at first parttime, then full time. I graduate in May of this year, at age 59. If you possibly can, go back to school.  Pursue your dream. If it is the Lord's will that you live to be 75, you will be 75 with or without a degree, and with or without having at least made an effort to pursue your dream. You may as well try.  I also want to write. I should say that I am a writer - but unlike you, I have only been published in my university's Literature, Poetry, & Prose and Art annual journal. You are already one up toward your dream - you've been published.

Why not calculate how much you can live you on, and get a parttime job you can handle, find some writers' organizations near you, join them, and start writing! But, most important of all -- at least for me -- pray and find out what you are led to do. If it is truly the desire of your heart, you will be surprised just how things will seem to fall into place.

God Bless!

Writing has great options.  You can write for some electronic magazines for pay, your can write for other institutes for pay, you can ghostwrite for others as well.

You can also self-publish your own work in blogs, e-zines, articles, website, etc.

I am a business and life coach.  If you would like more information on how to turn your love for writing into a business, let me know.  I can give you a free introductory coaching session on this topic.

One can take the skills learned while pursuing a hobby, and maybe produce a professional, profitable product, be it a craft item or small scale commercial food item from a secret recipe. A lot of marketing research must be done and the details can be daunting, not forgetting there may likely be some outright rejection and opposition to your efforts. The main thing is to be grateful for each day and to not let the past or future concerns kill the spirit and faith one needs to make it in their later years. We may no longer be a "fit" in the job market, but does our experience and measure of hard-gained wisdom have some value? It's beyond the "job market", it's a resource which needs some vast, s a v v y marketing so this youthful, on-the-go population won't see us old timers as excess baggage soaking up resources, instead of as valuable human beings. If we're not busy being alive then we're sort of busy dying.  Therefore, rediscover yourself if that's lost and if you know yourself, then you'll know what to do.
