I know how you feel.  I am 62 and the company that I worked for closed it doors in December, 2010.  I was a Business Development Specialist and held the record for the most sales in the history of the company.  I posted my resume on 15 different career sites on the internet and have gotted a hugh response.  I have gone through numerous interviews and second interviews.  I look a lot younger than I am.  They are all ready to hire me and when they do the background check which is impeccable but shows my age then I get all kinds of excuses for why they can't hire me.  I am single and live alone.  I cannot retire, Not now and maybe never.  I am so afraid that I am going to end up homeless.  I don't know what to do.

Can you do contract work or act as a consultant?

You talk like you were in that position for a good while so you had to have made contacts - your expertise is in what you know and who you know - no better way to put that to use than to sell your services and be independent - contractor or consultant.

They might now want to put you on the payroll but if there is a job to be done and you know what you are doing, they might want to have you work under a contracted agreement.  Sometimes this leads to employment OR it may lead to you contracting with several firms at the same time.  It opens new doors for you.

Of course, as an independent, you will have to take on the roll of your own employer - paying ALL your taxes, providing your own health insurance coverage and retirement but the later (retirement) has some tax advantages for being self employed (SEP-IRA).

Another alternative is to start  your own small business. What are your talents.  Do you have any? I watched Project Runway. Last year the winner was a woman who taught herself to sew four months before she went on the program.  Think about sewing scarves, aprons or pillows.  They are easy. Just some pointers.
