I know how you feel. I am 62 and the company that I worked for closed it doors in December, 2010. I was a Business Development Specialist and held the record for the most sales in the history of the company. I posted my resume on 15 different career sites on the internet and have gotted a hugh response. I have gone through numerous interviews and second interviews. I look a lot younger than I am. They are all ready to hire me and when they do the background check which is impeccable but shows my age then I get all kinds of excuses for why they can't hire me. I am single and live alone. I cannot retire, Not now and maybe never. I am so afraid that I am going to end up homeless. I don't know what to do. In Response to Jobs: I dont know about you but getting a job even a part time job at this age is terrible. No they dont ask you how old you are but they ask what yr did you graduate. Wow it dont take a genius to figure out your older. I am 72 soon to be 73 I worked full time till I got laid off for over 20 yrs and laid off at 68. Now I have a lot to offer but no one wants it. Last resort I applied as a food server at a retirement home and was denied............My husband had a stroke we lost our home of over 20 yrs and my son and my son in law died. I need a job, just a part time one but a job...............I am so fed up with how they treat the elderly in this country......I'm done................ Posted by lovetoeat88 |

In Response to Jobs : Posted by jushf1 Can you do contract work or act as a consultant? You talk like you were in that position for a good while so you had to have made contacts - your expertise is in what you know and who you know - no better way to put that to use than to sell your services and be independent - contractor or consultant. They might now want to put you on the payroll but if there is a job to be done and you know what you are doing, they might want to have you work under a contracted agreement. Sometimes this leads to employment OR it may lead to you contracting with several firms at the same time. It opens new doors for you. Of course, as an independent, you will have to take on the roll of your own employer - paying ALL your taxes, providing your own health insurance coverage and retirement but the later (retirement) has some tax advantages for being self employed (SEP-IRA). |
