1) Great Summer Jobs for Retirees suggests that working at a ballpark, campground, amusement park, national park or as a pet sitter may be a great option for retirees. Have you ever worked one of these summer jobs, or found one that helped you bring in some extra income? |

Use caution financially. If your SS Benefits become taxable and you are married you may find yourself in the 27% tax bracket. Then add on the SS and Medicare at 7.65% and you will be at 34.65%. Based on $8.50 an hour you will be working for $ 5.40 an hour. The situation is worse if you are single. The Tax bracket will be about 43% plus the SS and Medicare tax of 7.65 % or 50.65% and you will be working for $4.20 If your SS benefits are not taxed you will only pay the SS and Medicare taxes of 7.65%. So the $8.5 will get you $7.90 clear. Do the math before you commit to working for nothing. If you just want to get out of the house and do something you like "Go for It" However you may be better off just volunteering. Charities, hospitals and parks are always looking for help. In Response to Did you work a summer job?: 1) Great Summer Jobs for Retirees suggests that working at a ballpark, campground, amusement park, national park or as a pet sitter may be a great option for retirees. Have you ever worked one of these summer jobs, or found one that helped you bring in some extra income? I have spent the last 6 years mowing grass at 2 of Texas's best golf courses and now am employed by AA Minor League baseball mowing the outfield. I took early retirement at 62 but supplement my earnings with about $900 a month from this seasonal part time job. Being an ex high school baseball coach, this is right up my alley. If you have any equipment operation experience, or are just a safe, fast learner, and mechanically inclined, give it a shot. I love it.Posted by AARPMiller |

In Response to Re: Did you work a summer job?: I work a summer part time job for a local landscaper. I don't make a lot of money, but it is an enjoyable job; lots of fresh air and sunshine, exercise, and "playing in the soil" - good therapy for whatever ails you. And, I've met some really wonderful people along the way. This is my third summer and loving it! Posted by merlin43 That's awesome that you found a part time job that you love. Sounds like an ideal situation for you! |
