About the Oboma thing!
Although I do not like the man OR agree with his plans, -- PLEASE stop misquoting him!
All that does is make his opponents look dumb!
No one (Except for the first lonely settler) did anything by himself!
One of my biggest beefs is about those that start a co and do not give credit to all those that helped him get there - be it employees or family and friends!
Do NOT be stupid and follow the rest of the sheep!
Vote Oboma out and choose someone smarter with OUR interests in mind.

I know of one individual who does pet sitting when individuals go away for anywhere from one to six weeks; she charges $20/hour, lives in their home, and uses up perishable and packaged food while there (supplementing her own as perishables are used up).  As for myself, my passion has always been organizing.  It progessed from a need to have order in my own life and now I am becoming a professional organizer.  I will not aspire to the people you see on TV (whose clients can spend money on expensive organizing furniture and shelving), but I know how to declutter and bring order to the messiest area within one hour!  So many people, and especially those now downsizing to smaller housing units, just cannot deal with "stuff" on their own.  I provide the nudge to look closely at closets and clutter, furniture and files, throw drawers and throw rugs, pets and plants.  I practice at my own dwelling and ask everyone I know for their unique tips.  Recently retired, I am finishing up with one client who not only has all of hers and her late mother's stuff, but is also physically incapacitated until she's cleared for surgery.  The key, as stated above, is to find your passion, satisfy Uncle Sam's or the state's, income and licensing requirements, and find a national web site for information and training.  I found NAPO (Natl.Assoc. of Professional Organizers), found two people in my city and emailed them cold, and both met with me to explain what they do.  One gave me a beginner's book just for this field, and now that I've extrapolated the key points, I'm ready to get the financial setup rolling.  I will be using SBA & SCORE for guidance here.  I say - go for it!!  It sure beats doing something you're NOT passionate about!

I've been self employed for over 25 years. I went from a large retail store to just working out of my home. I have a website and I sell alot to the Government. Almost all of my suppliers will ship right to my customers for me so I don't have to handle the products.  It's been a good business. We're able to take trips. We were able to move to be closer to the grandkids and kids. Smile

I did it (started a business)...and regret the mistakes I made by actually buying a job than buying a business. Make sure you're aware of the requirements (like understanding the business you're getting into...even if it's a franchise like mine was).I never made a profit and ended up closing the business after six years having spent well over half a million and being left with another $150 thousand of additional debt.

This franchise was already established and I received good training in the services offered, but never understood how much "off the books" business was really required to make a success of it. Oh, I could wrrite a book! (But won't). Just be filly aware of what commitments of time and money and ethics you're spending.

According to Obama, the person you told us all to vote for, you can't build a business. Somebody else has to make it happen. When you run articles like this you are talking out of both sides of your mouth.

I have to agree.  AARP really should stay out of politics.  AARP is far too liberal in their views and does not represent mainstream America.

Wow, how myopic!  The point being is this...  It would be very difficult to develop and build a business if you would not have access to TAXPAYER SUPPORTED infrastructure such as access to WATER, ELECTRICITY, SEWER LIBRARIES, HIGHWAYS, GOVERNMENT FUNDED PROGRAMS TIF DISTRICT FUNDS, just to name a few.  These are the obvious things.  A local guy who was totally broke, lost his big farm/estate, lived in an apartment - began hobnobbing with politicians about where to get government funds and support.  Today he lives in a multimillion dollar home once again - about 5 years into establishing his new business with all the government assistance - THAT IS WHAT PRESIDENT OBAMA is referring to.  You would be lying to yourself if you didn't admit that is true.  This is a good thing and our politicians must stop making TAXES a bad thing.  Taxes are what helps make our country function for heaven sake!

In Response to Re: Always wanted to be your own boss? 5 Businesses That May Appeal to You : This is an incomplete and out of context quote.  He was talking about highways and bridges. No small businessman could build these on his own and we all need them.  I suggest looking up this quote instead of just going with what you hear on TV.

Thank you  Susannelna, that is taken out of context. Lets stay on topic and leave the politics to talk radio.

I bought a small meat processing business back in the '80's when I was in my late forties. I had had it with losing professional positions because of failures of companies. I had been raised in the retail processed meat business so I knew what good to excellent products were. This company had generally very good products but needed improvement in quality and market share. I had figured it would take about two years to turn the company around into a positive cash flow. I had help from dependable people to heip in the decsion. Well, to say the least, I miscalculated and became capital poor and could find no help to get me through one more year. Not even the SBA. So, I had to "give" the business away to our best customer. The business is going to this day. I had great plans but was unable to complete them. I did improve product quality and market share but needed about one more year. One big mistake I made was refusing to private-label some of the products for good customers. This was because of pride. I goofed. My advice is to always keep you options open.
