I am 54 and I was recently reviewing my retirement possibilties.  I was looking at my 2011 and 2010 statements from SS and noticed that all the numbers on my statement amounts went DOWN on the 2011 from 2010 statement. That doesn't make sense to me. Only went down a few dollars but still...frustrating.

I'm trying to get my 2012 statement now since they stopped mailing it.

Maybe by the time I can retire the amount I will get will be down to zero!

Does anyone know if this is correct?  Or should I contact SS and ask about it?

Which figures are you talking about?
Your actual earnings or the Estimated SS benefit?

the est benefit.

                                  2009                         2010                              2011
earnings                    up                             up                                  up
est benefit                 up                             up                                 down

Ive heard talk the soc security tax went down in 2010 to cause this.  I will check my paystubs to make sure.  I sure hope if I'm getting less then I'm paying less now too.

You are paying in less in taxes.  Remember you are getting that 2% employee payroll tax reduction at least through the end of 2012.

However, your SS benefits are figured on earnings but the estimate is just that - an ESTIMATE.
The most important thng on your benefits statement is that your earnings are recorded correctly.
