Before our Louisiana lawmakers vote to cut Social Security and Medicare, I would like to ask them if they have any idea whom they should thank for the privilege and right they have to make responsible decisions as they should in Washington DC. I would like to ask them who they think forged Louisiana and the rest of the United States into the greatest country in the world if it wasn't our senior citizens. I would like to ask them if they were there when our seniors landed on the beaches of Normandy and had nowhere to go but forward into a wall of German machine gun fire and see their comrades being blown to unrecognizable pieces by artillery fire. Do these decision makers realize that the women back home worked in shipyards replacing the staggering amount of ships destroyed by German U-boats in the North Atlantic and Japanese Kamikazes in the Pacific? These American women put to shame the amount of work that is being done in today's American shipyards where the bulk of the workers are Mexican and other immigrant workers.

Were our lawmakers in Korea where the first significant conflict of the Cold War began? Were they with our seniors when the Communist Chinese entered the war attacking and severely outnumbering our troops in the Battle of Unsan? The Korean Conflict is called the Forgotten War but our lawmakers have forgotten more than that.

Were our lawmakers at the Battle of Hue during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam when North Vietnamese forces conducted a surprise attack throughout the country including the city of Hue. A fierce battle ensued and American forces defeated the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Forces but not soon enough to prevent the North Vietnamese forces from massacring 6000 unarmed civilians in the city of Hue. Throughout the Vietnam War, our troops never lost a major battle. Some say the war was lost due to public sentiment; others blame it on politicians who never served there.

Do these lawmakers realize that the oil industry was forged in a large part by our senior's extraordinary efforts here in Louisiana? Offshore drilling was first accomplished in Morgan City, La. due to the efforts of our seniors. Countless people lost their lives in the early days of oil exploration by trial and error that has made oil exploration safer for their children to work in the industry today.

Our seniors labored long and hard at shipbuilding, fishing, trapping, and as deckhands and captains of motor vessels that traversed not only the Gulf of Mexico but the many bayous, rivers and lakes we have in Louisiana. They did this to make a better life for their children and their children's children. They wanted to send them to College so they could have the education these very seniors were deprived of because of having to work at an early age to support the family. Now many of these children's children sit in front of electronic screens playing video games. They are more interested in baseball practice or dance classes than school work. Many young adults cannot hold a job because they failed a drug test at work. They don't have a clue what hard, back breaking work seniors have done to give them the opportunity to make this country even greater then it is and they are throwing it away.

We still do have young men and women with American values deeply rooted in them. They are serving or have served our country with distinction and honor on the fields of battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. They still value an education over extracurricular activities. They still work hard to support their young families. They are also few and far between. And how will their lawmakers reward them in their old age for the contributions and sacrifices they made for America?

Not only are our troops who served valiantly in the past wars as I mentioned above heroes but our seniors who won these wars by out working and out producing any country in the world are heroes as well. Without their efforts, no war could have been won. Our technology was and is second to none. But the generation to follow has become an "entitlement" generation. And to think that the lawmakers call Social Security and Medicare for seniors "entitlement programs".

Now our lawmakers are poised to cut social security and Medicare for Our Greatest Heroes our senior citizens. Is this really how you want to repay them for their sacrifices when they were young? Is this really the legacy you want to have your signature affixed too?

Well put Russell. I remain hopeful that a groundswell of folks rally in Washington D.C. on this very subject.

In my opinion, AARP should be putting it together, organizing the transportation for those members who need/want it, handling logistics, etc, to ensure that it will be a peaceful rally -- significant in its numbers, and deliberate in its message. It could be the wake-up call to our children and grandchildren that would get their attention, and inspire them to fight against the carry on the good fight.

Even though we have the internet today, it will always be first and foremost that feet on the ground makes the biggest impression.

AND HAVE COME BACK TO NO JOBS, THEY JOBS THEY HAD ARE GONE NOW!!!!!!!!  SOCIAL SECURITY IS A DRAIN ON THE ECONOMY ONLY BECAUSE 11 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS BEEN STOLEN FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND.  I WAS WATCHING THE MORNING JOE SHOW EARLY THE OTHER MORNING, AND JOE SCARBOROGH SAID HE THOUGHT EVERYBODY KNEW IT, THAT 11 TRILLION DOLLARS WAS STOLEN FROM OUR SOCIAL SECURITY FUND AND AN IOU PUT INTO IT!!!  NOW THAT IS THE REAL REASON THAT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE ARE A DRAIN ON THE ECONOMY.  WHY DOESN'T SOMEBODY INVESTIGATE THAT?  IF IT WERE A BANK. A COMPANY, ETC, IT WOULD BE INVESTIGATED, JUST LIKE THE MADOFF SCHEME WAS INVESTIGTED, A OLDER COUPLE LIVING IN FLORIDA WERE MILLIONAIRS ONE DAY AND THE NEXT DAY THEY WERE BROKE AND THEIR CHILDREN WERE GOING DOWN TO FLORIDA TO GET THEIR ELDERLY PARENTS TO LIVE WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE BROKE DUE TO MADOFF.  HE IS IN JAIL NOW.  AND 11 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS BEEN STOLEN FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND AND NOBODY IS LOOKING INTO IT?  AND NOW THEY WANT TO CUT SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE SOME MORE???  I HAVE BEEN AN AARP MEMBER FOR 10 YEARS.  I WANT AARP TO INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER.  I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE GOVERNMENT USED OUR 11 TRILLION DOLLARS FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND FOR.  WHO IS THE PERSON , OR PERSONS, WHO TOOK MONEY FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND.  THAT MONEY WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE TOUCHED!!!  NO WONDER WITH THE BABY BOOMERS RETIRING, SOCIAL SECURITY IS A DRAIN ON THE ECONOMY ONLY BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT STOLE 11 TRILLION DOLLARS FROM THAT FUND AND PUT AN IOU IN IT.  PLEASE, PLEASE AARP, I WANT TO KNOW  WHO TOOK OUR MONEY AND WHAT THEY SPENT THE 11 TRILLION DOLLARS ON??  HOW COULD BILL CLINTON HAVE BALANCED THE BUDGET AND HAVE 11 TRILLION DOLLARS MISSING FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND??????  DID BILL CLINTON USE OUR 11 TRILLION DOLLARS TO BALANCE THE BUDGET?  DID CONGRESS USE IT TO GIVE THEMSELVES A RAISE EVERY YEAR LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO, THAT SHOULD BE UP TO THE PEOPLE WHETHER OR NOT THEY DESERVE A RAISE IN CONGRESS AND THE SENATE ANYWAY, NOT THEM, I WOULD VOTE A RAISE FOR MYSELF TOO IF I WAS ABLE TOO, WHO WOULDN'T?  AARP, WE KNOW THAT 11 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS BEEN TAKEN OUT OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND, AND  WE WANT TO KNOW WHO TOOK IT OUT, AND WHAT IT WAS USED FOR.  AND NO MORE CUTS TO SOCIAL SECURITY OR MEDICARE, THEY STOLE OUR 11 TRILLION DOLLARS, OUR MONEY, AND THEY WANT TO CUT SOME MORE?????????? AARP PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, IT MAKES ME SICK!!

I couldn't agree with you more...it's SO FRUSTRATING! Can you ever remember a more frustrating time?

I'm pretty much giving up on AARP at this point and am throwing in with the OccupyWallStreet crowd. If OWS can keep the movement peaceful there is a really good chance that some good will come out of it. The politicians need to feel the heat for anything to be done. Their demographic covers all ages, even though the media (who completely misundstand it) constantly say refers to it as "young people."

Check out their "declaration" here: http://nycga.cc/2011/09/30/declaration-of-the-occupation-of-new-york-city/
