Social Security has been in the 'crosshairs' of the radical right since it was first passed into law.  Nothing has changed. Today, venomous rhetoric against Social Security, exemplified by words like 'scam', 'ponzi-scheme', 'fraud' proliferate throughout the Republican faithful.

When the so-called TEA Party surfaced within the Republican Party, they added non-rational ideology and religious zealotry to the political pot.  The rhetoric, libel and slander really took off, rivaling the days of Joe McCarthy and Barry Goldwater.  The Party Leadership was...shall we say....intrigued by the possibilities for exploitation this new faction represented.

Radical right neo-cons successfully gained control of the Republican Party,  employing the fervor of born-again non-rational evangelicals and libertarian zealots to flood precinct caucuses, primary elections and finally the general election ballots themselves.  These guys turned out....moderate, rational republicans didn't.. and so no longer have a home.

Social Security, as a concept,  has always been opposed by the Republican Party, moderates to radicals.  Current candidates use weasel words implying they intend to preserve this valuable government service.  By the way, it is not an entitlement at all....you pay for it...all of it.  Unless all the past rhetoric was a lie, the Republican Party still intends to do away with it. They need power though....and without your vote, they can't get it.

Republicans control the House.  That looks like it will stay about the same with some different players.  Right now Democrats are the majority in the Senate...but the filibuster controls what the Senate can or can't do.   Without a large enough majority to impose cloture, the majority is helpless.

The conservative majority of the Supreme Court sold us down the road to plutocracy with the Citizens United decision....not likely to be overturned and a Constitutional amendment is even more unlikely to succeed.....AND....the president elected this November will likely appoint two, if not more, new justices during his term.  It is imperative the Supreme Court return to a balance of liberal and conservative philosophy it does not now have.

Should Republicans gain control of the House and gain filibuster proof control of the Senate, only the President's Veto stands in the way of the radical right's intent to terminate Social Security....PROVIDED Congress cannot over ride that Veto. We need a Republican Party loyal to our Nation not to radical malcontents pushing anarchy not responsibility and license more than freedom.

IF both parties suceed in motivating and mobilizing the Party Faithful to vote the Party Line, Independents WILL decide the election in November.  If you value Social Security, think about this...and VOTE!

At the Republican Convention, Clint Eastwood described an act presumed to be physically impossible to perform on oneself.......but vote for Republicans in November and that presumption goes out the window.  You will have done it.

umbarch64, You hit the nail on the head, I dont care if you've been a Republican all your life, look whats happening. The corporate billionaires run todays right wing Republicans and they are throwing our struggling seniors, disabled,Veterans and poor children under the bus.
Cant everyone see the trend ? In 1980, CEO's made 40 times more in pay than the average worker and In 2010 CEO's make 340 times more in pay than our average worker. The Romney's of this Nation want to turn our workers into Communist China sweatshop workers, just thankful we have a job, while the CEO's live over the top.Where is the respect and compassion for all Americans ?
These greed driven Romney types dont need Social Security or Medicare, dont want to pay their fair share for it and dont care If we need it. Romney and Ryan's philosophy is " give more to those who dont need it and less to those who do and I'm sick of this Corruption of Democracy.
Romney changes his rhetoric, every time the polls tell him he's behind. If anyone trusts Romney, they better stay away from used car salesmen. I dont always agree with President Obama, but I trust he wont throw us under the bus.Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security:

Social Security & Medicare are the best plans to every come out of Washington. We all paid in all our lives for it and still do. It's not cheap at all. I worry about us and our children who have paid in all their life's and are in their 50's . the money was there till they used it and didn't pay it back. If anyone of us would of done that in business. We would be in jail. Are they going to give back all the money to the ones who doesn't get to use it? NO. They need to pay it all back and forget about changing a thing . Just put the money back with all the interest and flat forget about Obamacare . After 76 you have no healthcare for knee replacement, heart attacks & so on. Obama dropped us like a hot potatoes. Sell your house and you pay a flat 3% of the sale to Obamacare and you don't get it. Think about that. Everyone will be 76 someday. Now days 76 is young. Is all comes in place after 2013. VOTE NOW . Romney & RYAN is the only way to go. Obama has done nothing for us but put us out to die. But it's your choice. Think before you VOTE but vote.

Not only am I worried about the rising costs of all our daily bills, and SS not rising to match the increase - but how to make ends meet is becoming a survival game. Not to mention, it has taken all my Savings to do this. What happens if our check doesn't come, just for 1 month, I will be out on the street. I am so scared, and now with the dollar falling, what will happen to us on SS who have paid into it our whole lives??????????

The Republican Party has said that nothing will be done to ss/Medicare for those over 55 yet I have heard of a new way to figure the COLA being considered which will result in lower cost of living increases and the "donut hole" in the Medicare program which is what the retiree is responsible will be enlarged.
Retirees are already footing much of the recovery expense via interest rates being kept lower to spur business development. This same low rate is destroying any savings accumulations from interest on "nest egg" resources.
Is any committee or board or department in government  advocating for the retirees as they slip further and further into insolvency?

In reference to the below: the Socialsecurity.gov webpage announces that the cost of living increase is 1.7 percent, not 6 percent. I wish. Realistically, these increases are usually far below the cost of living and offset by the increase in medicare premiums. We need to act on our legislators to change this.

In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security:
In January 2012 all Social Security recipients will receive a 6% cost of living raise.  I am on Social Security Disabilty since the age of 56.  My check isn't all that big to start with.  That will give me a raise of about $20 per month and then of course the cost of Medicare is going to go up also in January.  My medical supplement already went up $17 and my RX coverage is going up another $10 starting in January.  I'd like to know how the government considers this a reasonable cost of living raise when everything has gone up much  more than the measly 6% in the 3 years that we did not get a raise! How would all those big shots in the senate feel about a 6% raise in 3 years?  They wouldn't like it a bit!  But they don't hesitate to kick the elderly and disabled in the teeth when their down.  THEY took OUR money!  Now they don't want to pay it back so they sit around thinking up ways that they can keep from giving it to us.
