In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security: Military retirement & Social Security are not Entitlements, They were earned! Our benefits aren't some kind of charity or handout! Congressional benefits = free health care, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days - now THAT'S welfare. And Congress has the nerve to call a Military retirement & Social Security an Entitlement? Posted by SC00TERBUM Look up the definition of entitlement under the government helm - Entitlement only means that it is a benefit that has been enacted by law and that covers all the programs from SS, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, TANF and on and on. |

Posted by SC00TERBUM Exactly....we all know this... and the republican proposals make no sense which is to cut benefits as seniors get older when their expenses will be even higher. Then, the R's don't care if people do hard-labor like waitressing, roofing, digging ditches for water leaks, housekeeping, assembly line jobs......they'll have to work til they are near 70 whether their health is good or not ......or starve ? Unbelieveable. !!! . More than a million youth between the ages of 13 and 29 receive some form of Social Security cash benefit support each month. Additionally the Social Security Administration reports that many young people with disabilities who enter their rolls are likely to remain on the programs for the rest of their lives.
We were for-warned when Lindsey Graham was on Meet The Press after the inauguration, and from what he was saying Republicans were about to mount an all out assault on SS. ....using this economic crisis as cover to do what they've wanted for 70 years....dismantle the New Deal. They want to tie SS to job creation and the debt in order to sell it to a gullible public. The Democrats had better keep getting the message out that SS isn't adding a dime to the debt, and has nothing to do with jobs. |

In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security: In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security : Are they gonna take care of your personal care needs when you get old and cannot manage on your own? OR are they under the impression that their FICA taxes will also pay for your care later on in life too? Many American think this is the case and they need to be educated. Posted by GailL1 NO people..... do not believe that Soc Security is ALL they will need for retirement. The problem is not what you stated....is that wages are so low for half the country that SAVING for retirement is near impossible....and that's where the disconnect is. Today, many seniors are only relying on S S because they made $1 an hour back in the 40's and 50's and how much can you save out of that even if you invested wisely. |

In Response to Re: AARP helping to pass Obamacare: As long-standing AARP members, my wife and I were appalled to learn through newly released e-mails from the House Energy and Commerce Committee that key officials from AARP worked hand- in- hand with the Obama Administration to insure the passage of Obamacare. You did this knowing full well that the overwhelming percentage of your membership opposed the bill. How can we trust you to do the right thing for seniors? Posted by Bnels Amen. It is disgusting to read the article and see how executives from AARP acted. You profess to be objective and represent the membership but the leadership obviously has there own agenda. Obamacare will have a large impact on Medicare down the road and we nor out esteemed leaders know what that impact will be. It has good points but it also has draconian aspects and will ultimately have to ration care in some way to meet budgetary goals. Ireland last week cut physician pay 38 % and will limit care to the elderly. This is what happens in a socialized system when the money runs out. |

Doing nothing about how SS money is spent increases the debt and interest paid on that debt because input doesn't cover output. Not doing something only loses more. SS was never intended to correct inequities in pay or wealth distribution although the benefits are heavily weighted to return a higher % to those who paid least FICA in. A high % of those benefits you wrote about should be paid for out of general government funds, not by workers and businesses alone. Posted by JANMB SS was never intended to correct inequities in income or wealth. SS expenditures do exceed FICA paid in and the "trust" has been borrowed against so the interest paid to it adds to the deficit daily. Doing nothing will only increase the deficit and so something should be done. All of the benefits you cite should be paid for out of the overall budget ,not just workers and businesses FICA. Hiding needed welfare in SS was wrong from the beginning and just got worse. |
