To keep SS solvent we should demand an immediate end to Obama's cuts in the SS taxes paid by current workers.  Is this part of a plot to kill SS by cutting funds available for payments?  Everyone knows the SS fund is in trouble.  He is only making it worse.  I paid FICA and my employer matched it every year.  Now when the economy is in trouble OBAMA cuts the money available to make SS payments.

The President negotiated for this, hopefully temporary. payroll tax reduction back in 2010 - Congress went along with it and it has been extended 1X until the end of this year unless extended by Congress.

The reduction in collections to SS for this payroll tax incentive to workers is being a made up from $$$$$ from the General Fund - however, that seems to mean, to me, we are further bleeding the country's overall financial problem

I've been on SS for 6 years and it's a great help. Obama passed a temporary reduction to help our depressed economy. You'd better hope he gets re-elected because the Repblicans want to privatize it. Then you'll blame him for the stock markets up and downs. SS raises are based on Ronald Reagan's formula based on inflation. In my opinion SS taxes should continue all year long and not stop at $100,000, yes many make over $100000/yr and get a nice mid year raise. That should stop and would also help the SS fund and congress should stop raiding the trust fund to fund the wars.

Yes, it's temporary and now when Obama talks about re-instating it the Republicans accuse him of wanting to raise taxes!!!

I agree wholeheartedly! Why are we stopping Social Securty payments for those who best can afford it? We have too long been giving incentives to the wealthy, while making the midfle class pay for them. Our tax system was supposed to be less for the needy, and more for the wealthy, but, the wealthy are able to find numberous legal loopwholes to avoid paying their FAIr share. Mitt Romneu and GE are perfect examples. Companies, and individuals who gain from this game of tax loopholes can be easily stopped by passage of laws that close the loopholes. Simple?? So , tell your representatives to enact these laws!!! If we all spoke up, this could be done!! Will the American people speak up about something other than high gas prices???? I am losing hope.

Your OA benefits from Social Security is based upon your earnings and how much was paid into the system.  So if you want the payroll taxation to continue after the ever increasing cap, then those folks will earn a greater benefit when they begin drawing it.

A tax loophole by any other name is still a tax deduction duely authorized by Congress, with rules administered by the IRSOur government uses the tax code to incentivize us - businesses and individuals.  Which ones do you use to lower your taxable income?

Why should employers even match payroll withholding - why shouldn't those that want to participate in this system pay the whole 15. + % and now even more with the ACA payroll tax surcharge.  The self-emplpoyed person has nobody to match their Self-employment taxes - they pay the whole thing.

Raising the CAPS would help...no question about it and some people don't live long enough to collect especially now that congress raised the ages on those even the millions  who do hard labor.     Raising wages also would bring in more contributions but the GOP is against raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour as Obama has suggested.

Back when Obama was first elected...
Lindsey Graham was on Meet The Press and from what he was saying Republicans were about to mount an all out assault on SS.  That made perfect sense to me....using this economic crisis as cover to do what they've wanted for 70+ years....dismantle the New Deal.    They've been  to tying  SS to job creation and the debt in order to sell it to a gullible public.      The Democrats had better get the message out that SS isn't adding a dime to the debt, and has nothing to do with jobs.   This scares me knowing how easily the public is persuaded by lies.   First they don't want to pay a decent salary to 40% of  Americans who do our necessary service oriented work and then when they are too old to work ...the ones who don't need SS and don't want to contribute the FICA tax also  don't want to give the retirees  SS either.   This is what we are up against.   Also the young think they won't need it do not realize they'll need 3 or 4 times the income they are getting now when they retire.....it was always that way.

In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security:
GOP Front runner Cain's 999 plan calls for abolishing Social Security and Medicare (New York Times, 11/13/11). Perry has called SS a ponzi scheme and unlawful. The GOP is against SS and Medicare by principle and would love to abolish/privatize them, as soon as they get in power, whether it be 2012, 2016, 2020, etc. And I don't believe their promises of not affecting those currently 50 or greater. They have a proven record of flip flopping and it is often a part of their plan. SO this issue is not going away; it is dangerous for us, and is dangerous for future generations. Should they get elected and abolish/privatize Social Security and Medicare, it will be a stupendous, catastrophic, disaster for the 10s of millions of poor and disabled elderly. Their only choice will be to wheel themselves out to th the trashcan and wait to die. This is the GOP plan for America in the 21st century, whether we like it or not. The day they get the power will be the day they begin their dismantling project. What is out only rational response? Is it to wheel ourselves out to the trashcan to die in misery? Of course not! We must therefore demand the Right To Die via a $99.00 Death Drug (we don't want any ahandouts). This is our only rational response because this "Dead Deal", the opposite of the New Deal, of the GOP is coming and nobody can stop it. Therefore we must do the only rational thing and demand the Right to Die. This is the unavoidable future of America.

The administration (Obama) made those cuts. Instead of a long range plan to fix the tax system mess, Democrats are going with a "soak the rich" increase in SOME income tax rates which won't come close to balancing the budget when the real loss of tax returns is due to all the add-ons( loop-holes,rebates,deductions, subsidies etc.).
