Just a little about life, social security and medicare and probably medicaid too.
Because of my mother's condition & care level, she can no longer stay in the memory care unit of her assisted living.  She is total care.

To keep her out of a nursing home, I have the option of putting her in a personal care home that has been recommended by Hospice.

I went to see it today and it is nice and I like the lady running the place.  The rate is basically what I have been paying so that is good  -  a little over $ 3500 per month.
There are (5) ladies in the home now; my mother will make (6) -  all are private payers.

Here is the life lesson -
At 90, my mother will be the YOUNGEST of the group.

Now I want each of you to think about how this is going to escalate in numbers when all us baby boomers begin to age.
Add in the fact that many have not planned for this sort of expense down the road.

So just start thinking about how much all our children and grandchildren are gonna have to pay in taxes just to keep all us old (and really old) baby boomer fed, changed and bathed, long after our fun part of retirement is over.

Many anecdotal posts don't happen enough to be relevant. Your's is.  The social structure of our country will face this problem more and more as life is extended further into debility by medical advances.  If we could apply the same rational criteria that science uses to our cultural outlook and philosophy I think we could deal with this consequence better than we do.  As long as a segment of our electorate rooted in non-rational belief systems is able to dictate how we govern ourselves, this kind of problem will continue.  I wish the answer were simple and easily devised.  It is not.....we have to somehow mitigate the non-rational impact and move forward with real solutions......yes....we can.

Believe me, I have done a whole lot of thinking on the subject and I do agree with you - but how we get to those real solutions is gonna be the hard part.  It seems that the "right to choose" takes on a different light when we begin to speak about it on the far side of life.

Personally I do not want to become a little ole ragamuffin where everything is done for me & to me.  Where is the quality of life under that type of existance?

I am new to receiving Social Security.  Last week I went to the grocery store and bought staples, many of which were not previously prepared foods.  When I arrived home, I went to my files and checked the same 19 items that I purchased this time last year and found that I had paid 30% more this year than last for the same items.  Gasoline has increased almost double (average) in the last 12 months.  Most federal employees, including US Congressmen, have received cost of living increases.  Some in the amount of 16% increase in one year, as per the US News reported on television.  I have been told that the Social Security recipients have NOT received even a cost of living increase for at least three years (as per local recipients).  Is there a chance that this inequity of passing out increases will be addressed?  And When? Funny the government doesn't take food costs increases in calculating Social Security increases.  When you print up more worthless pieces of paper, it takes more of them to buy an item.  Remember the Weimar Republic of Germany.  That gave us Hitler.

Social Security is not an entitlement program!. We have worked for every penny and deserve to have the security we paid for in the future.  I was born the year the Social Security Act was signed into law and paid faithfully every working hour so am I entitled...no it is my right.

Hang on Jack, as things are going to get worse.  Becoming a widow 4 years ago, I got a surprise on how my SS was going to be given to me, and as many widows have gotten a surprise, they are being cut way back from what was being paid when their spouses were alive.  It's a shame how SS has penalized surviors in getting their spouses SS.  One would think that we would receive what our spouse was receiving....wrong.  It's ashame we are also paying taxes on what was already ttaxed.  I think our children would be better off not putting in SS since our goverment is taking so much away from us, and putting it into their own savings with Roth IRA or something else.  Thanks to our goverment, they are stealing it away from us.

I fear Obamacare will destroy all that I have woked for and put money into, namely Social Security.  Obamacare will water down what I should get and allow people who have put nothing into any system to benefit from our work.  If you read into Obamacare  you will find a burden that  all seniors will face if an when they sell their home.  Another tax of $ $3,800 per 100,000 of value to support the newTAX called  Obamacare .   Again take  from the  Legal American (Documented) citizens to give to who ever the Dems want to pay.   Remember Jimmy Carter and his theft from Social Secuitity to provide benefits to people who never put  a dime into the system.
Beware of  4 more years, We seniors  can't adfford that!
