I doubt if we will ever be compensated for the notch years.  Are they hoping we will all die before they reach a reasonable solution.  I was married twice.  Both husbands are dead and they were in the notch years!

That the government will use up what I have worked hard to put away in SS for my retirement.  Government should not be using for "other things", only for those who have paid into it.

There are 2 huge fears..... One is that the huge ballooning debt of the treasury coupled with the political gridlock will prevent any of the needed changes for social security from being enacted (or even considered).  This in turn will continue to cheapen the dollar.  This cheapening of the dollar is an almost hidded REDUCTION OF BENEFITS that keeps people from understanding what is really happening to our social contract.   AARP's continuous trumpeting of "maintaining the status quo (Don't let them take away our promised benefits) is truly a hinderance to the necessary discussion that needs to take place.   Until some attitudes are changed (including that of AARP) our social security will be cheapened till it will become almost worthless.  We simply cannot continue to keep kicking the can down the road and ignoring the things that must be addressed.  Reality must be addressed!

Thank you, mc for a very good post.

Definitely, seniors receivng benefits today and in the near future had better think about what is actually affecting their benefit - and you are exactly right, the huge ballooning debt of the U.S. - the more money that is printed the less worth each dollar has.

The AARP has their own agenda.  Sometimes keeping people dumb and dumber makes them easier to manipulate.

I get very annoyed every year when you start in February trying to get me to renew my membership that isn't due until JULY.

There is no necessity to bombard me with all this mail. Snail Mail and E-Mail.

If you want to keep me as a member send me one bill in June and forget all the other mailings.

My biggest fear is that if a Republican president is elected; he will privatize social security, or that congress will write a bill to eliminate seniors benefits and also the supreme court will strike out benefits needed by middle class and poor people and also the disabled like my wife who was born with Cerebral Palsy.

Fear driven by greed. We all know who would be anxious to get rid of Social Security. It isn't all of us that have been paying for it all these years and deserve it. I can tell you those not in need of it and feel it is money taken out of their pockets are truly behind this and fear that they just might have to keep paying into it are. They look down at us like we are a burden with their profit objectives. The majority of this country want Social Security. We don't look at it as a threat. So whoever is trying to change it or eliminate it has to be of the minority. I thought this country was run by the majority not just by those that could  afford to make our government conform to their own needs.

Seems to me, it is the current Administration in the White House that has pushed for & gotten  the payroll tax cut thereby cutting into the current incoming revenues of the Social Security system.

It was President Reagan that put in changes in the 80's that secured the system financially for those receiving benefits today.  I didn't like the changes that he made back then because I had to pay more in Social Security taxes but today I understand exactly why he pushed for the changes that he did - to shore up the fund for now and all us baby boomers coming onboard.

Yes, something does have to be done for FUTURE beneficiaries - those retiring in 2036 and later - That would be when my children are retiring.  If you ask them, those that have grown up investing and having IRA's, Roth's, 401K's, etc. they might just tell you that they wish to manage SOME of their Social Security contributions.

Today, Social Security beneficiaries should be more concerned with how far this money is gonna go in their daily lives.  With the debt of our country, inflation is just beginning and will affect all those things that we have to have to live - food, transportation cost, heating oil.

My fear is that because I have a Teacher's retirement Plan in the state of Georgia, Social Security will not pay me my husbands social security when he dies.
