• Mitt Romney has expressed support for Obama's proposal putting the money attached to Social security in private accounts and has also suggested extension of retirement age and base indexing on prices rather than wages.

Barack Obama never said one word about putting Social Security in private accounts....that is something that Mitt Romney and the Republicans want to do!  This is one lie that Romney has said.....

Mitt Romney is not telling the truth,, Barack Obama does not want to put Social Security in private accounts!

The way I remember it during the Carter administration Alan Greenspan, prior to his Federal Reserve position, (the Greenspan Commission) deemed Social Security as strong and viable and claimed it would be for the long run.  Unfortunately Ronald Reagan borrowed from Social Securty - the People's Money - and thereby set off a bad trend, literally ruining a perfectly good system.  With the ensuing economic spirals the government never really could pay back the loans and Social Security remains badly bruised.  So not only did they borrow the people's money and not pay it back but now they are trying to further bamboozle the public, shirk their responsibility and create new ways to avoid giving back what belongs to the people.  Reagan should never had taken that money and neither should anyone else afterwards.  The public should protest and demand the accelerated payback of the entire loan and get Social Security to function as it was intended to.  If they don't it will never be what it was and the seniors of this country are going to be on austerity budgets for the rest of their lives.  Well that is my fear and my opinion to boot. Cool

This is totally false and nothing more than a political attempt to blame one party for the woes of Social Security.  Both parties along with Washington bureaucrats have not addressed the needs of Social Security since Reagan's presidency.  It is in critical financial condition and has to be fixed now.  Fear mongering like this isn't the answer.  Remember when Paul Ryan tried to logically address the problem and a political group had a TV ad showing Ryan pushing a senior gal in a wheelchair off the cliff?  This juvenile type of political behavior along with a totally dysfunctional Washington has ignored the Debt Commission, the Gang of Six, Rick Foster, Chief Actuary of the CMS and the CBO who all request action to save Social Security now.

There is a bi-partisan attempt which may result in saving Social Security for our grandchildren and great grandchildren.  The Wyden-Ryan Bill is perhaps to beginning of this fix.  Social Security is not broke now but seniors should take a close look at the Trustee Report which will come out this May and contact your Representatives to voice your opinion on how to fix Social Security now.

Sorry but you are wrong.  Ronald Reagan did not harm Social Security he saved it from going broke.  Please do proper research before making any absurd political comments.  In a bi-partisan effort under the leadership of Ronald Reagan saved Social Security by working together with a Democratic Congress to pass legislation.  http://www.ssa.gov/history /reaganstmts.html#state  This is exactly what must be done now to save Social Security again.

It is the responsibility of every senior citizen and every worker who has a vested interest in Social Security and Medicare to stay alert.  Both Medicare and Social Security are in serious financial condition.  Watch for the Trustee's Report for 2012 which will come out in May.  Read all available unbiased information from independent sources and don't accept information from the Republican or Democratic Spin Machines.  It is your monies which are invested and your Social Security and Medicare so demand that these programs be saved before it is too late.

Thanks, Charlie for correcting ARRPdenizen -
He/She must be making up their own history because Ronald Reagan did save Social Security and it is plainly documented with facts and figures on the Social Security Administration website.  His changes were documented to keep the program running well for 25+ years and then he said it would have to be tweeked again.  And here we are, needing that tweek.

I would hope that ARRPdenizen will go back and read history and correct their head.

There is much confusion about SS and FICA taxes.Few people realize how much it has changed over the years with both parties being involved. What was initially a combination of a saving or annuity plan for old age and a welfare program for disabled and others paid for by employees and business has become a real monster. The OA benefit which most people think of and defend first,is really an annuity with a poor return for most people in terms of FICA paid over a lifetime when you look at the calculation og benefits based on only a max. 10 years of FICA with benefits ranging from 100% of the first part of that best average to 15% for the highest part, that is a more  "progressive " split than the income tax code! In addition part of your OA benefits may be added to gross income and taxed again on what we paid taxes on in FICA! The welfare part is a good thing, but it takes up about 25% of the SS outlay and should be separate; supported by ALL taxpayers instead of business and workers alone.
The "trust" fund has been a money well for government that now has interest costs that are a big item in the federal budget and deficit.
Something must be done soon no matter who runs the show in DC.

I read an article that medicare premiums will go up quite a bit for 2012 and to right around $245.00 by 2013 is this true?  As we see no cost of living raise in the last 3 years it must be obvious to SS if they are raising our premiums that all things cost more. Over the years the government has borrowed from the SS fund and used it for other things and has not to date paid it back.  If they would pay back the funds they borrowed, maybe the fund wouldn't be in trouble today.  I think this should be of major concern..

The way to ensure that SS and Medicare are fully funded is to not vote for Democrats. Obamacare took $500 billion, with a B out of the fund, and Obama's 2012 budget removes another $300 billion, with a B... His failure to ensure a friendly supply of crude oil from Canada and his "investments" in failed "green" energy, his attack on the constitution of the United States, and his lack of leadership need to be replaced, and soon.  Did you all know that Obamacare will add more then $1 billion dollars to AARP revenue? That is why they support it.
