Sorry but you are wrong. Ronald Reagan did not harm Social Security he saved it from going broke. Please do proper research before making any absurd political comments. In a bi-partisan effort under the leadership of Ronald Reagan saved Social Security by working together with a Democratic Congress to pass legislation. http://www.ssa.gov/history /reaganstmts.html#state This is exactly what must be done now to save Social Security again. In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security: The way I remember it during the Carter administration Alan Greenspan, prior to his Federal Reserve position, (the Greenspan Commission) deemed Social Security as strong and viable and claimed it would be for the long run. Unfortunately Ronald Reagan borrowed from Social Securty - the People's Money - and thereby set off a bad trend, literally ruining a perfectly good system. With the ensuing economic spirals the government never really could pay back the loans and Social Security remains badly bruised. So not only did they borrow the people's money and not pay it back but now they are trying to further bamboozle the public, shirk their responsibility and create new ways to avoid giving back what belongs to the people. Reagan should never had taken that money and neither should anyone else afterwards. The public should protest and demand the accelerated payback of the entire loan and get Social Security to function as it was intended to. If they don't it will never be what it was and the seniors of this country are going to be on austerity budgets for the rest of their lives. Well that is my fear and my opinion to boot. In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security : Posted by GoodTimeCharlie Thanks, Charlie for correcting ARRPdenizen - He/She must be making up their own history because Ronald Reagan did save Social Security and it is plainly documented with facts and figures on the Social Security Administration website. His changes were documented to keep the program running well for 25+ years and then he said it would have to be tweeked again. And here we are, needing that tweek. I would hope that ARRPdenizen will go back and read history and correct their head. |

In Response to Re: Share your fears about Social Security: I read an article that medicare premiums will go up quite a bit for 2012 and to right around $245.00 by 2013 is this true? As we see no cost of living raise in the last 3 years it must be obvious to SS if they are raising our premiums that all things cost more. Over the years the government has borrowed from the SS fund and used it for other things and has not to date paid it back. If they would pay back the funds they borrowed, maybe the fund wouldn't be in trouble today. I think this should be of major concern.. Posted by bstjohn J I CONCUR. AARPLADY |
