The city of Baltimore kicked off the week by making history, well, local history at least. On Tuesday, a bevy of officials from the city level to the federal government came together to announce publicly the U.S. General Services Administration?s selection of the JBG Companies to develop a $150 million build-to-suit office facility for the Social Security Administration. With JBG in place to develop and own the 538,000 square-foot property, the GSA signed a 20-year lease agreement with the real estate company, marking what is being touted among the local real estate community as the largest single office lease deal ever to transpire in Charm City.

The timelines and cost associated with this datacenter are preposterous. Private industry can accomplish larger projects faster, with less cost. Unlike the military security requirements, there are no particular criteria that makes this task harder to accomplish than a private cloud datacenter. It?s clear to me why the government isn?t able to accomplish anything of substantive value.

Stimulus Funding Drives $750M Fed Data Center

The Social Security Administration will use fresh funding from the Obama administration?s stimulus plan to build a $750 million high-security data center in the Baltimore area, federal officials tell the Baltimore Sun.

You have been told lies.    The Govt administrative costs are NON -PROFIT  and  that's why they are cheaper than any corporation that is non-profit but most are for profit.....even your healthcare insurers are for profit.

Social Security has never missed a paycheck in 70+ years.     I LOVE THE GOVT.      This idea of hating we-the-people or the govt  is  just a trojan horse that Wall Street started so the rich can get richer.

It might be advisable for the government to learn some lessons from the private sector.  That way, maybe we could put an end to all this "waste, fraud and abuse" that constantly plagues it in various departments.

We have more government owned real estate than we know what to do with now.
