I wanted to let you know about a new petition I created on We the People,  a new feature on WhiteHouse.gov, and ask for your support. The title is "Urge you to protect the current method of calculating the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)." This is of critical importance to all of us. The link to get to the site (you may have to cut and paste to your browser is: http://wh.gov/XXf6

Proposals to substitute a “chained CPI” calculation for the current COLA index are inaccurately characterized as a “technical adjustment” and will substantially reduce the current and future benefits of the millions of Americans receiving Social Security.  This change is actively being considered in the budget negotiations.

Will you add your name to mine? If this petition gets 25,000 signatures by December 16, 2012, the White House will review it and the Obama Administration will issue an official response.

Thank you

This suggestion was introduced last summer during the debt deal debate.  It is explained at this link:
AARP:  07/21/2011 - Social Security: Lower COLAs on the Table - New inflation measure could shrink checks

Economist introduced the new way to figure the COLA based on a calculation which contains better reliability on how folks react to inflation.  Something goes up that you buy and you change to something cheaper.

Do you not trust government to make the best decisions for making the SS system stronger and longer lasting?  It is their job to make the best decision.

If Reagan and Speaker O'Neil had not worked out problems with SS back in the 80's I doubt we would still be sending out as good of benefits as we do today.

For 2013, the COLA is 1.7% but that is BEFORE the Medicare Part B premium is calculated, which will reduce the COLA increase for 2013 if it is more than this year.

The COLA calculation also affects more than just SS - Veteran & Military benefits are also tied to to the same calculation and I think Federal employees too.  So it does need to be as accurate as economist can calculate it cause it is quite a chunk of money when even low inflation is calculated.

And the senate play by different numbers....

I think that it is humorus that the economist think  the only way to correct  social security is to lower the COLA and they try to cover it up by creating a new formula. Members of congress should get realistic with the cost of items today. Instead of a new formula why not change the items in the basket which is used to establish the COL adjustment. I am 80 years old and have paid into SS for more than 40 years. I have been hearing about that basket for many years and have never heard that the items were changed. Congress seems to always reduce our just return for all we paid into the system. We would not have this problem if congress would stop using the fund as their own piggy bank to fund pet projects.Members making these decisions should get out and meet real people. When they go home they must stay in the house or local club and only meet people of their level.I recommend that they talk with and listen to the working people.Mingle with people in Mom and Pop convience stores, coffee shops, local car repair shops, taxi drivers, truck drivers, barber shops, womens salons, etc. When doing that task don't have a camera following with you. The common working guy doesn't need all that attention. I practised the mingle approach in all my working career. My career was in electronics, first by the U.S.Air Force  as an enlisted member and left after 4 years as an NCO. I mingled with my fellow airmen and was aware of the grumbles in our Radar Shop which gave the LT. a heads up before things got out of hand. After discharge I worked in electronics but on designing and building Antennas mainly for the space program. During this time I was working full time and used the G.I. Bill to get educated in Physics, in the evening. I rose to project engineer level and because I had good releations customers, mostly government personal, I was promoted to Marketing. In this I was promoted to V.P. of International Marketing. I content that a big part of me raising through the ranks was a result of my relationship with the people doing the work both in the U.S. and International. If congressmen would get out and talk with working people they would find out that every thing is increasing in price and they are worried. I have only S.S. as income and I am worried. The only group I know are not worried a people who get funds from the government and they are worried that the programs may be cut. But because we paid into the S.S. fund it is the program which will be cut. Instead of using beef and chicken as the example to justify a reduced COLA why not use the price of gas always increasing. What do we replace it with? How about shoes. Have the congressmen and Ladies purchased shoes lately?  I guess that shoes is a bad example because we could reduce to Flip-Flops. Meals in restaurants keep increasing, I eat out maybe once a month, cook at home all the time because it is cheaper. I don't smoke or drink alochol other than a bottle of wine a couple times a year. I drive a 1997 Chev. van. Everybody I know on subsudised programes have 2 or 3 year old cars, my TV was purchased in 1993 before I retired. people on the programes have 50" to 60" flat screen. They wear designer clothing and $100 shoes, I wear jeans from an on-line discount and haven't bought new shoes in more than 10 years. Congress needs to get realistic in solving the problems and get out and mingle with the working class.  Bill 12-11-2012.

President Reagan cared equally about all Americans and would not have anything to do with todays Tea Party led Republican leadership and their Plutocratic views. President Reagan's Budget Director David Stockman recently said President Reagan would not have allowed Boehner, Cantor and todays republican leadership to behave like they have during the past 4 years.
President Reagan's Tax Rates is what President Obama wants to go back to , but todays Republicans want more breaks for the wealthy on the struggling backs of our seniors, disabled and Veterans. No there is no Speaker of the House like Tip Oneill anymore, instead we have Plutocrat Boehner.Response to Re: Protect our Social Security cost of living COLA adjustment:
