When my husband died in 2008, I received several small death benefits and also, I had to withdraw money from my retirement funds in 2009.  This caused my adjusted gross income to greatly increase for 2009.  Social Security greatly reduced my checks and increased the amount I paid for the Medigap insurance premium.  I used the form sent to me with my notificaton on this ... to specify details that I did not usually make a higer income.  I never heard back from Soc Security and my checks did not increase.  Now, my checks are still low even though my adjusted gross income now shows the realistic much lower income.  A word of warning about planning dates for receiving income.
