Jan, I just hope there is still enough moderate republicans, who still support protecting Social Security and Medicare. I dont think enough of our seniors and disabled realize what the right wing republicans want to do with us. They could care less about us.
Today's right wing republicans believe If you didn't make millions in your prime, tough luck, you dont deserve to survive with dignity. Response to National Debt & SOCIAL SECURITY:

mandm84 and JANMB - The radical right extremists within the Republican Party are NOT being countered by moderate Republicans........yet....  Yes, the last Presidential election showed recognition of the threat they pose at the national level....especially to some demographic groups targeted by their tirades.  BUT, the smaller the electoral base, the more successful the radical activist still is.  Check out local election results.  Radical extremists still exert control over school boards, town boards, municipalities, courts, state legislatures, gains have been made by radical governors and mayors relative to Independents and Liberals nationwide.  A Republican majority was MAINTAINED in the US House of Representatives.....not diminished.

An increased re-districting effort skewing demographics to benefit radical extremist viewpoints is being mounted.  In one state, had such a gerrymander existed,  the outcome of the Presidential electoral vote count would have changed.  To say chicanery was involved is an understatement.  Presumeably election results will favor Republicans in the future at all levels IF the gerrmander is not overturned.  So..... some of the tears shed over voter fraud by 'frequent weepers' are crocodile tears at best.

These guys are in it for the long haul.  That really ugly punching dummy that pops back up after you knock it down.....time after time after time has stuff at the bottom that makes it do that.  If you want to keep it down, you've got to get rid of what makes it do that. Being reasonable is not in the DNA of the radical extremist.  Violent and imtimidating behavior is.

Too bad the moderate Republicans found that behavior useful for a time, lost their voices and sold out.  Either that or threw up their hands and disappeared into the mists.   Why now do you think they might clean up their own house? They might get their hands dirty, donchaknow?

Yes, since the Treasury securities held by the SS trust fund are debt instruments, when the national debt is added up the trust fund is included along with the public debt.

However, since the trust fund Treasuries are fully paid for by the payroll tax, Social Security does not add anything to the federal debt or deficit.

The aggravating thing about this, and what we should all understand so that we can successfully counter the constant attacks on Social Security, is that all the claims in the media that Social Security adds to the debt are entirely incorrect.  Even the redemption of Treasuries from the trust fund do not affect the debt because of how it is done.

Liberals are right to reject Republican proposals that would slash social- programs even as they refuse to consider closing tax loopholes for the wealthy.      And I agree that the sequestration will cut into the bone of important government functions and investments in the future.
If people were getting rich on SS and Medicare that would be one thing.  But, it just barely keeps some out of poverty but at least not a burden having to live with  their married children and grandkids who are barely surviving as it is.     How can anyone suggest cutting benefits for the most vulnerable in our society.....we are better than that ! !
Leave S S  alone and this nation needs a ONE PAYER. or Universal Healthcare like any other industrialized country......in the long term of it....we'll all be better off.
