Republican House Speaker Boehner is damanding reducing our Social Security COLA and cutting $1 Trillion from our Medicare/Medicaid. This is unacceptable to ask our already struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans to struggle even more with less.
The 1 Trillion Dollars in cuts to our healthcare will cost us over an estimated $ 3,000 more per year.
Contact your representatives and tell them you wont stand for such an unfair compromise. Contact whitehouse.gov and tell President Obama not to accept this offer because our struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans cant afford to fall further behind.Response to Eliminating Social Security COLA:

Again, it is the President that is putting this new method of computing COLA on the table.  It is not eliminating them - they will just be figured using a different method - one in which will save some money over time and not just from SS or Veteran benefits - there is a host of other programs and figures that it sets -
Where in the world do you get your news?

The President's last offer came out today:
HuffPost Politics:  Nancy Pelosi Predicts 'Democrats Will Stick With The President' On Fiscal Cliff Deal
"President Barack Obama's latest offer in the fiscal cliff negotiations would allow the payroll tax holiday to expire, meaning middle-class workers will see smaller paychecks in 2013. It also proposes a Social Security reform known as "chained CPI" that would reduce the benefits senior citizens receive through Social Security.

Additionally, Obama's latest offer would permanently extend the Bush tax cuts for incomes of less than $400,000. Previously, the president had insisted that taxes increase on families with income above $250,000."

Nice spin Gail,  trying to blame President Obama for putting Social Security cuts on the table, when we all know Republican Speaker Boehner has said for over a year that our Social Security and Medicare entitlements, as he calls them,  must be cut and that the Republicans wont even discuss tax hikes for the wealthy without serious reductions to both Social Security and Medicare.
President Obama wants to preserve Social Security, so dont even try to make it sound like its President Obama who wants to lower our COLA. Anyone who has been listening to Boehner knows he doesn't give a hoot about our seniors, disabled or Veterans. Republican Boehner is trying to get blood from a stone, by asking for cuts in our benefits. President Obama cares about our struggling seniors, disabled,Veterans and poor children, but Republicans like Boehner could care less. Lets keep it real.

This isn't spin, it is coming from the WH and the Dems on the Hill.  I'm just reporting what the WH (The President) has offered in his most recent proposal.

We all care about others but breaking the bank ( deficit ), will help no one.
The President has to look at the country as a whole.  He has too keep the economy puttering along whether by government spend or private enterprise - actually he want both.  In order to do this there is only limited money available - so he has to make the decision as to where to use the resources to his best advantage to the whole country.

The chained CPI formula for computing COLA  is a far reaching type of savings - more than just SS.  Even if you ask the WH or the BLS, where these formulas emerge, nobody can really say that one is more accurate than another.

I don't know what will happen in this negotiation but we will all feel it one way or another - the rich, the poor and the middle class.

IT IS ALL ON THE TABLE.

Its so fair that those struggling have to feel more pain. You cant get blood from a stone, but the Republicans will try with their proposed $1 Trillion in cuts to Medicare/Medicaid and they say thats a compromise. The Republican leaders like Boehner have NO compassion for our already struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans. Response to Re: Eliminating Social Security COLA:

Hate to blow some people's bubbles, but OBAMA is the dirty traitor to us seniors and disabled who depend on Soc Sec every month.  Obama is the creep who has put the "chained CPI" benefit cuts to Soc Sec into the package for Boehner to consider--Boehner thank god blew it off.   We seniors need to IMMEDIATELY PUMMEL Obama's email and phone number with our FURIOUS OBJECTIONS to his turncoat idea!!   Use this email:   info@barackobama.com, or 202-456-1111.  DO IT ASAP.   Hasn't anyone noticed how Obama depends on the voters when he needs to get elected, but as soon as he's safely ensconced in the WH, he COMPLETELY FORGETS WHO PUT HIM THERE?    His power has gone to his head badly:  to wit, his push for unwarranted detention of American citizens without cause, plus several other attacks on our civil liberties.   He disgusts me no end.   I'm glad I never gave a penny to his campaign this time, I didn't do a lick of work for him this time, and I told him in email that I only voted for him because he was the lesser of 2 evils.   And believe me, that's cutting it as close as I could get it.

Do you have any idea what would have happened to our seniors, disabled and Veterans ( 47% moochers ) If Romney had won ??? There would have been NO COMPROMISE !!! You would be paying through the nose with a " Voucher System " for healthcare and watched our Social Security be privatized to Wall Street. Be careful, who you consider your enemy. Response to Re: Eliminating Social Security COLA:

Current Social Security COLA calculation is unfair

The current COLA calculation unfairly misrepresents the increased cost of living experienced by seniors.  The proposed "chained-CPI" is worse.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics has been tracking what they are calling an "experimental" CPI for the last 30 years that establishes that seniors, due to increased health care costs, experience an increased cost of living at a greater rate than the rest of the population.  They have tracked it for 30 (thirty) years, but it hasn't been used to set SS COLA's.

Instead of either sitting back and accepting whatever they (politicians) do, or lobbying to just settle for the current unfair CPI/COLA calculation, why can't we move forward and push for the correct CPI calculation to be adopted?

If you look to the BLS - they keep about 40 different measurement of CPI going.

Last I read, they did think that the chained-CPI formula was a more accurate measure for the overall measure.

But who knows - both the (now) measure and the chained CPI are based on "urban" workers and not any particular group.

Whatever the method - the CPI calculations for COLA adjustment affects MUCH more than just a SS cost of living adjustment in the public as well as private sector.
