With prices going up on everything, food, gas, medications over the counter as well as prescriptions, Seniors need Cola raises every year. It doesn't really keep up with inflation, but every bit helps. We cannot have our Cola cut, instead it should be raised every year.  Congress needs to get this!  We earned our Social Security with all the years we worked.  The Cola is needed also  to keep people from going under, as many people have a hard time just putting food on the table and paying for medications.

Even Ralph Nader is on board with the President to restore the Tax Rate, to where it was before Bush cut it , for the wealthy. Nader believes our S.S. and Medicare can be preserved. Nader also said Corporations have enjoyed the lowest Tax Rates in decades and Corporate Welfare must end. Response to Re: Cola raise???:

the house and Senate have forgotten who they work for. Why can't they give up a little of their pay and cola? Have they forgotten who sent them their to do our bidding? They have forgotten and gotten comfortable in their surroundings and made their own deals to benefit themselves. Their are very selfish in forgetting who put them there. Power , they love it and won't let it go I am a true believer of term limits also for house and senate that way they cannot get to comfortable  It is a shame they forgot who put them there..

It is imperative that my husband recieves his Cola raise this year.

We worked our entire lives in our business trying to have something for retirement. But due to health issues was force to give it up.

We have already went through 90% of our savings just trying to get by. Now you are telling him that he will not get money due him.

PLEASE give him & others the  Cola raise. DO NOT deny the raise that is due so many of  Illinois residents that depend on Social Security as our only source of income.Frown

I would be willing to have my social security check reduced by a few dollars a month if it means we can preserve the Social Security system...

Do you agree that we should go backwards after working your whole life. They must adjust the system so that seniors get an increase not a decrease

I don't believe that current social security recipients or those within 5 years of receiving social security should have their COLA adjusted in any way.

I have to keep asking the question of not only myself but others out there:  Why is it that seniors, especially those 65+ have to continually fear that their future S.S. payments will be less?

No matter which proposals both parties have put forward, there always appears to be a "cut" of some kind for the above group.  Why is that?

This is the group that can least afford to have cuts on their income.  A lot of us have no other resources, or jobs to be able to make up the difference.

If we did, the resources would soon be depleted and who is going to hire someone 70-80+?--Very few employers, if we are not hiding behind the truth.

Changes to any program should begin with the youngest in society who can hopefully adjust their earnings, savings, etc.  They, at least, stand a chance of being able to make the adjustment.

I am asking AARP and all my fellow seniors to speak up to members of Congress to let them know we wouldn't be in this fix if black budgets and raiding of the social security funds for many years had not been allowed.  Probably most people are not aware of this.

Right now there is a TWO TRILLION PLUS IOU OUTSTANDING from the government to the Social Security Fund.  Those who are responsible for this may have the means of making up the difference in their own S.S. or helping those in their families on S.S., but most of us do not.

I think it is shameful that this type of behavior has been allowed to go on for so many years and now we seniors are being asked to DO OUR SHARE.  Haven't we already???

I've been on social security plus a minor stipend from the VA for my husbands death due to his 100% rated VA disabilities.  I thank God most highly for taking care of us widows and orphans of military men and women.  Now every year I start shaking in my knees when I start thinking about my income increase of my cola benefits.Last year I received whopping 3.8% increase when at the time my rent went up 7%. and just yesterday I received my new increase which tops it all, 10% of my rent which equals $74.00 a month more.  I don't know about everyone else but I'm sick and tired of eating soup and crackers while out member in Congress and the Senate give themselves raises much bigger (about 100%) than the rest of us suckers who vote them into office.  I've come to the conclusion that our welfare is just  being stolen out from under us.  Now the SS dept. is trying to get rid of our cola increases and drop our income and put us all in the poor house while we age to death.  My knees are knocking and it's hard to type this with the way we are (the aged) being treated after working 40 years and putting MY MONEY into the Government each paycheck.  What is happening up there on the hill, the sound of money crackline into pockets of heartless lawyers who are steeling the money off of our backs!!!  SOMEONE PLEASE TRY TO DO A 100 MILLION MILE WALK FOR US GREYHAIRS TO WASHINGTON TO SHOW THESE PEOPLE A THING OR TWO ABOUT THEIR MOTHERS AND FATHERS, GRANDPARENTS AND SO ON WHO WERE BORN AFTER WWII who sacreficed all for making this country rich and powerful. How shameless they are. Let's do the march!!!! even if we have to be wheel chaired there!

Donna,
The Cost of Living Adjustment has already been figured for 2013 - it will be 1.7% based on the current formula computations.

However the Medicare Part B premium has not yet been publicized - it is forecasted to be higher than it is this year but it won't take up the 1.7% increase, hopefully.  It should be posted by HHS a little later on this month.

I wish your husband well with his treatment(s) and you too as his caregiver.
