According the the Huffingtonpost AARP is hosting a meeting with many of the people who what's to cut Social Security and Medicare.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/16/social-security-cuts-aarp_n_1344934.html

Fact 1. Social Security is an insurance program.  People paid into it, in the case of the "boomers" they paid twice (for their retirement and their parents) thus the over 2.6 Trillion surplus in the SS trust fund.

Fact 2. Social Security can paid out every cent owned for the next 27 years.

Fact 3. After 27 years Social Security can pay 80% for an indefinite period

Fact 4. Just raising the $106,000 cap, the ceiling above which no more payments are required, to $250,000 makes Social Security solvent for ever!  It's an easy fix.

Now for Medicare, Medicare part D added a large benefit that wasn't paid for.  But there is something that will save $80 Billion and it's a easy fix to.  Just allow Medicare the ability to  negotiate drug prices!   Just like the VA.

Concerning Your FACT #1:  "Social Security is an insurance program.  People paid into it, in the case of the "boomers" they paid twice (for their retirement and their parents) thus the over 2.6 Trillion surplus in the SS trust fund. "

I don't think that "paying twice" is exactly true - When President Reagan boosted the contributions in the 1980's, it was done because the fund was getting low - so I guess you could say that us boomers have paid a higher amount into the fund for ourselves since that time.

Concerning Your FACT 4. "Just raising the $106,000 cap, the ceiling above which no more payments are required, to $250,000 makes Social Security solvent for ever!  It's an easy fix."

The SSA & Congress is looking at many different scenarios to up revenues - These revenues will be built up overtime to hopefully stop any reduction of benefits 20 - 25 years down the road.

There are financial issues that have to be taken into consideration for each scenario.
Raising the cap, which you think would solve the problem, is not a failsafe because as you go up the income scale for the top payroll tax contribution(maximum taxable income earnings), the amount the beneficiary would receive upon retirement would also increase.

As you see there are many proposals for SS solvency -

Proposals Addressing Trust Fund Solvency

And each of these are being evaluated:

Individual Changes Modifying Social Security

Never an easy task to take more money from Americans even if it has a noble cause

It sounds as if this "salon" has the intention of promoting the notion that SS and Medicare cuts can somehow contribute to debt reduction. I have to ask in whose interest is AARP acting?

One reason I joined AARP was to have a voice in benefits cuts in SS and Medicare. As a 64 year old I am unavble to buy health care do to pre existing conditions. Heath care provided by a risk based plan which allows for pre existing conditions would cost $ 1600.00 per month that amount is impossable to pay out of my $ 7.89 per hour salary.

Many retired persons are continuing to work and pay into social security just to keep theirt heads above water.

I am working, have worked for 50 years. I expect to receive both SS and medicare benifets.

I say no to back door deals.

I sent an email to AARP asking about the upcoming "secret" meeting between AARP CEO, Barry Rand and Social Security, /Medicare opponents(e.g. the US Chamber of Commerce and others from the financial world)  AARP acknowledged my email but did not respond to my inquiry about the upcoming "secret" meeting.

I would like to ask AARP "officials" if they are truly representing the interests of its "members" or are they representing the interetsts of the 1% of this country.  Again, I ask AARP "officials" if they are  representing the interests of its members who are the 99%?

Social Security and Medicare are programs that are not gifts, but they are programs that we have paid for by our hard-earned money.  Barry Rand and other AARP officials should not allow the top 1% of this country try to balance the budget of this country on the backs of the elderly and middle class.  If AARP  officials go along with the US Chamber of Commerce, Representative Paul Ryan and others, AARP can expect a mass exodus of its members.

AARP officials, please be more transparent in regards to this issue.  And be more upfront with your members.  Remember--without its members, AARP would not exist.

Thank you, AARP.

Sincerely,

Earl Shumaker

I have shared with some of my fellow AARP colleagues the comments I posted on blog.  The consensus from my colleagues is that the AARP townhall campaign is definitely a smokescreen for covering up the fact that AARP has already decided that AARP will be siding with opponents (such as the US Chamber of Commerce) in slashing our Social Security and Medicare benefits which we have paid for.  Also, they mentioned several times that AARP is does not need to hold these townhall meetings since through surveys and communication with members, AARP knows the sentiment of its members:  Leave our Social Security and Medicare Benefits alone.

I am sure that AARP has read this board and also have read the Huffington Post article.  Their silence is not golden.  I will be carfeully monitoring AARP's involvement and will make my decison on continuing my membership based upon what they do or do not do for their members.

Those that have ever been an "employee" or been "self-employed" paid into the current SS and Medicare System - so it doesn't really matter if you consider them 1% or 99% -

Rich or poor is not the measure for these benefits.  They are entitlement benefits because you contributed to the programs.

Yesterday's news mentioned that the AARP has come out strongly against the and Republican's Social Security cuts proposals and  Social Security changes in the Paul Ryan budget proposal.

But what about the Paul Ryan Medicare proposal?  What is the AARP's position on this?  The news media mentioned that the "secret" meeting between the AARP establishment and opponents of Social Security and Medciare resulted in the AARP's position on Social Secrity but there was nothing mentioned about Medicare.

Could it be that the AARP has nothing to say about its position on Medicare at this time because the AARP establishment has a highly vested interest in Medciare products?  If this be the case, is the AARP once again putting the profit-making interests(e.g., Medicare supplements, etc) of the organization above the interests of its own members/
