I hve been retired for 2 years.  I still do a little bit of telecommuting with a former client.  However, I'm not making it on SS and the small airline retirement I have.  My total income of $2000/mo doesn't go very far when my rent is $1000/mo.  So I am seriously looking into retiring to South America.  I understand that there places there where you can retire and live comfortably on SS.  Any advice, anyone?

I am interested in retiring in 2 years. My husband and I had plans to travel and spend 3 months each year in a different spot. He passed away unexpectedly and now my plans have changed. I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for nice places to go (travel/rent) for older singles. I don't mind "hanging out" with my couples friends, but I sometimes feel like the 5th wheel!

I know what you mean about feeling like a fifth wheel - I am recently divorced, and my couple friends are polite, but it is clearly not the same. I share your question about the older singles destinations.

I took an early retirement in 1990 at 55 years old so I could work in my passion the Literacy Volunteers. But for many reasons I moved on in 1996.

I had retired from the Corps of Engineers where I worked on the Great Lakes for 40 years, 20 in the Regulatoary Program. A friend found out my background and recruited me for the Sierra Club. I work on the Great Lakes, issues and now fracking and recently have gotten into Nuclear Energy Threats. Its fun and I learn new things daily.

I had a active life hiking, bicycling and skiing but had to have a ankle fused and have been slowed down since I turned 75.

We started a Pet Sitting business in 1996 after I left the Literacy Program. We don't advertise anymore so things have slowed down and I don't mind that too much.

I am busy but still get to swim three tiems a week for an hour or so a session.

My retirement plans are to remain to stay as healthy as I can and to avoid boring things and people. Retirement is fun if you do it right.

I retired earlier than planne due to health issues caused by "construction" at my work place. I wasn't really ready in my head. I have spent the last six months healing my body and trying to squeeze three years of research and thinking into months. I feel better now, both physically and psychologically.

I am sick of being cold. Don't much like being hot either. So I am moving to where the weather is more to my liking. For me, that means the west coast of Oahu. I know. I know. The cost of living is pretty high, but using city data.com's city cost of living calculator,I found that the cost of living is actually 1% lower in paradise than in South Orange County, California, where I live now.

I plan on enjoying the fabulous weather there by spending most of my time outdoors. I am a published author, and have two books in the works. I will finish them on Oahu. The city I have selected is growing. I intend to continue learning about the city, and lend my expertise to the efforts already underway to develop the city so that it works. Finally, I will play hostess to family and friends who are looking forward to my move.

I retired 3 years ago. Gave up my little condo, sold off my stuff and moved in with my daughter and her family , at their request. It has been the best thing I ever did. The first two years I traveled a good bit spent 6 weeks with each of my other children and my BFF, on the East Coast.
This past year, I did not travel as my daughter, a mother of 3 forfilled a dream of hers to donate a kidney to a needy stranger. After 6 months of rigerous testing, she did just that.
I now work a part time job, assist with house chores, taking the teens to their activities, and enjoy a wonderful relationship with my daughter and the best son in law I cold ever have. It has been great.
I have my own room, TV, bath and have found this to be ideal. I come and go as I please, as do they but for the most part we are together.
I'm sure it ain't for everyone, but it has worked great for us. And yes, I do know how very fortunate I am.Laughing

I think the retirement plans can be very different for men and women.
And, if you plan for years to retire together, and then find yourself living alone, it can be especially difficult.
Planning , though, is essential for women.
