West Virginia (unfortunately, where I live)
Why?
Prices seem to be based on coal miner's wages - not everybody is a miner.
My State Farm car ins costs about $250 a year more than what I paid in TN.
You name it - they tax it.
Winters are too cold - too much snow.  (That probably applies to many states.)

There aren't many other states I would consider living in, retired or not.  I agree that Illinois tops the list but, there are many others from which to choose.  Forget Northeast, New England and Great Lakes.  No way I would live on either coast.

I will probably live in Texas until I die and with few if any regrets.

Wisconsin, where I live, because of the weather, as I get older it get harder to bear it, they tax everything or have some fee for it, and they really don't seem to like older people. My wife likes it here so we have to agree to disagree!

I agree with the article's ten worst states. However, Nevada has no state income tax and you can buy property for  a song because of the foreclosures.  Just don't invest in real estate there any time soon.

We're Virginians who planned for a Florida retirement 13 years ago. We bought a first rate home for 43 cents on the dollar and we're not being taxed on income, plus we get a homestead exemption on our home.  No tax on food helps a lot too!

Believe it or not, the State that I would not like to retire in (again), happens to be your #1 pick to retire.  I tried Texas for about one year and found it to be the most expensive place to live.  I had lived in California before Texas and California was much cheaper.  The property taxes in Texas are very high and when you choose not live in a City, then the "delivery system" for utilities, etc. is another high expense.  I have now lived in Williamsburg, Virginia for four years and find it a very comfortable inexpensive State to retire.

New York, the state I currently reside in. The taxes are extremely high, the utilities are also also high. The cost of home owership is absurd, and renting is no better. Luckily I live in the tri-state area, right next to NJ/PA. So I can get cheap gasoline. Gov. Cuomo is trying to streamline how NYS operates, but it is going to take him awhile. I'm 55, and not a goverment employee(NYS or Fed.), so I have 11 years till retirement. My wife and I plan to move to Florida, Texas, or Arizona. Can't wait.
