For all of its bad press, Florida is still the place to be.  Great weather, friendly people, relatively low cost of living, lots of free and inexpensive attractions (Iike beaches and the nation's best state parks) and great health care on virtually every corner. I've lived all over the US and would still choose to retire here.  Despite the population boom, there are still so many unspoiled areas of incredible beauty.  And right now, because of the banking/'mortgage mess, the whole state is on sale.

Florida is the state I will be retiring in because I have lived here since 1961, the weather is great most of the year and they are senior friendly.  The only draw back is that wages in the area where I live are behind the times, and the expenses are are with the times so it does make it difficult for those on a very limited income.

The state is south of the Mason Dixon line - I leave it unnamed as we want people to come visit, we'll provide you a pleasant vacation, then go home.  But please don't come here to live, "furtherers" moving in are ruining it for the locals.

I would like to live in Maine, near the ocean.  I just need one bedroom with a fireplace.  That is the dream anyway.

Florida.... I miss it so.  But the reality is the economy there has been hit hard all over the state and people are out of work and moving out of the state.  There are so many cities where block after block of abandoned homes sit  and pools turn green.   I miss the sunny weather and mild winters.  Yes, some say it is way too hot and humid, but we got used to it.  Yes, it has hurricanes, but so do other states.  Bad weather can happen anywhere.  I have lived in a lot of states, but Florida is the one that felt like home...

I would like to live off the coast of North Carolina in the colder months, and spend the warm months cruising around on a houseboat!

Michigan.  so beautiful in every season of the year.   Summers not too hot, winters not too cold...both tempered by the big lakes.  And the lakes and lake shores, so lovely, clean, sweet water and sandy beaches.   The forests, the rivers.  The wonderful local produce....blueberries, cherries, asparagus, peaches, sweet corn.  The wildlife, the northern lights. The friendliness and sense of community.  The history.    And when you really want the amenities of a big city, like a symphony or ballet or a great art institute, both Chicago and Detroit only 3 hours away by car or train.  Indianapolis, Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburg, Madison all in easy reach.    You can feel like you are in the middle of everything....without feeling like you are in the middle of everything.

If you can afford it, Northern California, south of San Francisco, Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel.  One of the most beautiful places on earth.  In winter it's home to thousands of Monarch butterflies (just arriving now).

Seriously that is one of the most expensive areas in California.

Three choices, haven't made up our minds.  Anacortes, Washington or Redding, California or Asheville, North Carolina.  Washington has a wonderful climate (not as much rain as you think), right on the water in Anacortes, small town, wonderful people.  Northern California also has a good climate, there are so many places that we love that are easy to reach (Buellton, Manchester Beach)--not on the water unless you drive a little.  Asheville has a very acceptable climate, beautiful area, people not quite as friendly but it's okay, love the Outer Banks (not too far away), and best of all a not-too-difficult drive to the Canadian Maritime provinces, which we REALLY love.
