Im thinking of heading to Washington.  I live in Las Vegas, NV now and it is just not conducive to the serenity, nature and overall quite peace of mind Im looking for in retirement.

Georgia!  Georgia is  a very laid back and relaxed state.  I live in the country of south of Georgia with access to Tallahassee, FL, and all the city amenities.  There is Florida State University, which is the best university in the state of Florida and I love their Football program!!!  I have the best of both worlds.

I live in Boston and hate the winter....   Florida too hot in summer.  My son lives in Berkeley  Ca.  I would love to live there if I could afford it.

New Mexico in either ABQ or Santa Fe. I lived there before, beautiful people, very friendly, beautiful country, progressive attitudes. Can drive forever with out a great deal of traffic, less expensive to live then in California. Always sorry I had to leave.

After living in Deep South Texas for 25 years, I have decided that I don't want to be a Winter Texan. I am moving back to the small community I grew up in in Kansas. I look forward to being closer to relatives and reconnecting with childhood friends.

The area we call Georgia-lina - I live in South Carolina, but do most of my business in Georgia.  Taxes are either cheap or non-existent (depending upon your situation.)  In fact everything costs less down here!  Summers are HOT, but there's always air conditioning; winters can get cold and yes, we do get snow occasionally, but it's not like Buffalo!

New Mexico - I know where I DON'T want to retire - we are currently livng in a military "bedroom community" - the only viable economic activity is the bases - this is fine for some, but very few businesses can offer much, includingeven very  few grocery stores, as the military folks can shop on base.  Our medical care is very poor in many cases - the local hospital has declared bankruptcy - and it is really difficult for our kids to get here for a visit (or for us to travel to see them) as we are an hour and a half away from an airport, bus service is not well-utilized (and the trip takes well over 24 hours) Local transportation is not very accessible either- the climate tend to be extreme, so walking or bicycling are out for most of the year.  Settling here was a regrettable choice - next time, I will place medical care first, public transportation second and look for a more well-balanced economic base.  Just call me "Anxious to get out here...  if we can, as we are both in our mid-seventies.  Whatever you do, think it through carefully.  Other than that, this is a quiet, clean little town in south-central New Mexico - maybe good for some, but NOT for civilian retirees who are reaching the age where travel ismore difficult.

After living in the Northeast for most of my life all most anywhere would be better....My wife and I would prefer the warmer weather of the south but maybe not as far south as Florida. We are thinking more KY or TN area maybe even NC.

Clean, green, four seasons with many colors, four dependable not too hot summer months, plenty of good air, food, ale, wines, beverages and 2 hours to a pristine coastline. Almost anywhere just west of Portland, Oregon.
If you can put up with only a few snowy days (stay inside and be warm),lots of clean rain (just wait a bit,it'll stop) and can afford to keep and maintain an older car, buy a reasonably priced apartment, condo or home it'll fit. Also there are frequent buses and the cheap MAX rail right across the larger metro districts and plenty of constant places, many free, for your music, arts and entertainment.
It's a great locale for meeting people with loads of common sense and pleasant political conversation if that's your thing, and it's probably where the smarter folks from the sixties decided to gather upon retirement. Even Californians get welcomed these days !  No real smog and well-maintained highways - our flagmen and women are very polite - and we'll throw in good, libraries, medical and senior services unless you also like the wackiness and fun that happens constantly (movie-makers love it) in Portland City !
Oh, I forgot. I think most of us like to keep the state population below 5 million so there's much more forest and mountain fun for all.
Oregon, where it's clean, green and well-mannered !
