In Response to Do you do Bed and Breakfast?:
Hi folks, my name is Thomas and I have a website with thousands of bed and breakfast inns from accross America.  Essentially the site, http://Bescover.com connects travelers with innkeepers, as they can go on the site, pick a region, and see the details and prices for inns in that area.  My question to you?  Do you currently patronize bed and breakfast inns?  Have you ever?  If not, would you consider it?

And what does this have to do with the question of the best state to retire in?

If .I could afford to it would be N.Y.C.  Makes me feel young which I could use now that I'm 66.

Fripp Island, South Carolina!  We have over three miles of a private beach and diverse home prices with the security of a gated community.
Just 20 miles from the beautiful and famous Beaufort with a lovely downtown off a lovely waterfront park.  Hilton Head, Savannah, and Charleston all an hour away.

None. I'll be returning to Quebec. I love the USA but where I'm from we have a little more civilized way of looking at health care. Also, If I may add. If you are a Canadian citizen you can vote. You don't need to register or worry about obtaining the proper photo ID. We have never had a problem with vote fraud.

I just moved to Az. from Indiana.  I've been coming out here almost every summer since the 1980's.  I have family here, as well as Indiana, and Ca.  Everything you could want is here.  Mountains, lakes, desert areas.  Mostly sunshine.  Prices aren't bad either.  The older I get, the less I want to cut grass, or shovel snow, so this was a good place for me to move to.

The state is south of the Mason Dixon line - I leave it unnamed as we want people to come visit, we'll provide you a pleasant vacation, then go home.  But please don't come here to live, "furtherers" moving in are ruining it for the locals.

I agree. I live in a part of my state that only 3% minority & very little crime. Fishing makes my area a good vacation spot for fishers. We don't need liberals to come here & mess this up for us.

What a selfish attitude.

I have no idea what to do ...... I'll probably "retire" earlier than I had planned this coming January ...... I'm only 55, live in NYC (a 1926 top floor walk-up apt!), pay $250/mo to park in a commercial garage down the block and own an adequate 2br/2ba condo in an older SE Fla retirement community where the average age is probably 80 (my parents bought the apt in 1984).

I know that I must move out of this old rental apt I've inhabited for 33 years, but don't know where to go next.  I'm not married, have no kids, have some family in the NYC/LI area (most of whom I see only a few times a year), have a few close friends in the NYC area, a niece in DC and a close friend in Las Vegas who I visit 3 times a year.

I don't want to move all the way out to eastern LI to be near my brother & sister-in-law because it's 60 miles from NYC -- what's the use of staying in pricey NYC if I can't easily get into Manhattan?  I don't want to spend winters up north either -- the FtL/Boca area is nice and I'm familiar with the roads/restaurants/theatres/stores -- it would be great to make new friends around my age, but I'm not sure about starting the second chapter of my life alone in a new place (and dread packing/moving).

I haven't visited too many places around the country (except for short stays in SF and So Cal while passing through on my way to Hawaii, a 4-day tennis vacation near Scottsdale and a trip to the St. George, Utah area).

Once I retire, I want to work on my health and getting into better shape, but I'm not an "outdoorsy" kind of gal -- I'd like to live in a pretty place that looks/smells clean with a low crime rate and affordable housing to rent or buy, but it doesn't have to be near ski slopes, hiking trails, fishing lakes or beaches.

I'll have a good NYS pension and don't want to live in a state where I'll have to pay state taxes on pension/income/SS/IRA/401K savings that will erode my fixed income's buying power.  In addition to doing volunteer work, I may decide to work part time if I find something I like with a lot less stress than I have in my current job.

Any advice for me before I officially retire in January?  Undecided  Thanks!

Washington.  It's a beautiful state with some vibrant big cities, lots of smaller cities, is on the Pacific Coast, and has the beautiful waterways and coastline of the Puget Sound.  We have two mountain ranges and lowlands in between.  We also have many islands with a ferry system serving them.  We have no state income tax and the cost of living is reasonable.  It's a very progressive state especially for women.  Currently we have a female governor, two female senators, and half of our supreme court is composed of women.  I also enjoy being on the west coast of the U.S. and within easy distance of Oregon and California.

Washington??    why, I live here, too,   but  the taxes  will get you. they even wanted to tax food at the grocery store, and I mean everything, not just deli items!   voters had to turn that down.  However  we do have the ocean and the mountains to see.  JUst make sure you have enough retirement to live on if  you move here.  spgmoon22
