In Response to Which state would you most like to live in during retirement?: 1) 10 Best States for Retirement names New Hampshire as the best state for retirement. Which state would you like to retire in, and why? Posted by AARPMiller Nevada. Not only would I like to live here in retirement, I have already retired and moved here. You have low taxes, low housing prices, unlimited things to do, and most importantly warm weather. No more shoveling snow for me. It is also close enough to California that I can visit my children whenever I want but I don't have to live in that state. Why would I want to live somewhere where I will be taxed into the grave. |

This is a great question, especially as certian states, such as California experience financial difficulties, and others, such as the midwest, experience drought and climate change. I have a business called http://Bescover.com which is a directory of Bed and Breakfast Inns, so I get to speak with and see the best parts of cities and states around the country. With so many beautiful choices in America, and so many factors to consider in choosing the right place to retire; the cost of living; space; transportation; clean environment; family, etc. -- for me the most important factor comes down to where will I be happy. So I am going with Hawaii, the weather is nice, it's easy on the bones, and the view is always beautiful. |

In Response to Re: Which state would you most like to live in during retirement?: We retired in Surprise, AZ -- NW Phoenix and OUT of those Scottsdale dust storms. We're in Sun City Grand with 4 golf courses, awesome restaurants, pools and activities. Low property taxes and absolutely awesome medical care and hospitals nearby truly enhance this location. If one wants to cool off in the summer, it's an easy and breath-taking 2-hour drive to the high country (7,000-ft. level) -- or visit the snow sport areas in the winter -- or tour the fall colors. Beattiful vistas, red cliffs and awesome sunrise and sunsets await... Posted by noraleeu Thanks for the input. My wife and I are looking to retirement soon and this is one of the areas we are considering. We plan on making several trips to AZ to look at a number of retirement communities before we make any final decisions. We are considering renting for a while prior to making a decision. We would be interested in knowing what surprised you about living in this area that you had not anticipated Norm |

In Response to Re: Which state would you most like to live in during retirement?: Texas - cost of living is low - lots of activities - weather is great - NO SNOW! - state is conservative in all ways. Posted by jhaas717 Depends on where in Texas you live. I know from living there for decades that Dallas has a high cost of living, as does Austin. I've also heard that Houston is pretty expensive. Texas has no state income tax, nor personal property tax. On the other hand, real estate property taxes are very high in the urban areas. There are progressive pockets throughout the state, Austin being the most well-known.
