In Response to Re: Which state would you most like to live in during retirement? :    Sun City Center Fl on the West coast has a gated community  and is a very friendly active senior community. We have lived here since we were 55 (now 65) both work part time and hubby plays softball and pickleball in his spare time. I go to the beautiful fitness center every evening. It had 200 different clubs and plenty of transportation. Grocery stores, Walmart, restaurants, etc are all within walking distance. Lots of people use golf carts as their main mode of transport.

Hello, I have been looking  on the websites for housing in Fl. and came across Sun City. The areas look great and the property seems to be very reasonable. So in Sept. I will be in that area

Never thought I would say that I love it here, but I do.  I considered lots of places but home is where the heart is.  I grew up in indiana and lived in So. calif  while in the Navy.  We arrived in western ny the day the driving ban was lifted after the Blizzard of '77' so have seen it at its worst and best.  There are so many things to do here that u expect from other places but our end of the state is truly a beautiful place.  The wine trails,  international travel to Canada and just plain beautiful country vistas. I worked for many years till physical disability made it necessary for me to retire 2 yrs ago.  Yes we sometime have brutal winters but the area is still beauiful.  Seeing Niagara Falls covered in ice and snow is a sight few know about.  It is a spectacular sight that is worth visiting again and again.  And if bad weather is predicted u have plenty of time to get out and get what u need and be safely home before it hits.  The entertainment  and arts are top notch and we have one of the best Cancer institutes in the nation and our hospitals rank right up there too.  So all in all I am happy here with my children and grandchildren and can visit relatives in other states if I feel the need for a change.
It can be expensive, true, but u have to plan for that also.  This happens in every state--notice that every post says something about how expensive it is so its the way it is everywhere.  It just takes your heart to decide where u want to live out your life and then u work to make it be the best it can be.

I am tired of the Iowa winters and ice, so I am thinking south, far south, but not soutwest, didn't like AZ to crowded, to much traffic!  I enjoyed the Tampa area when we were there for an Iowa bowl game.  So I guess the answer today would be Florida.

After living in California for 26 years, we began plotting our Great Escape from California two years ago.  We've lived on my retirement since I retired in September, 2009.  My wife retired in August and isn't drawing any retirement benefits yet.  FYI - 41% of my federal pension is tax free in Oregon. We moved back to Oregon to be near family.  We had a custom home built on an acre we purchased.  We owe nothing on our homestead except for our annual property taxes.  We just got our property tax bill, it's a 1/3 of what we paid in the Bay Area. We have a fantastic view of MT Hood.  Life is good!

Been in Oregon 14 years.. its beautiful, they don't tax social security but they certainly tax all of your federal pension, property taxes are high and local bonds and taxes are increasing every year... For these  reasons, Oregon is Not a Tax friendly place to retire....

Any info on East Tennessee would be very helful to us Strongly considering retirement there!!

I lived in East Tennessee(Soddy Daisy) back in the early 90's and I absolutely loved it there. Any snow was gone by early afternoon. 1 to 2 "ice storms a year but other than that I loved it there! I moved because I got married and we moved to Southern Florida. People of Tennessee are very nice and welcomeing. If I wasn't disabled right now...I would move back there by myself.

The state is south of the Mason Dixon line - I leave it unnamed as we want people to come visit, we'll provide you a pleasant vacation, then go home.  But please don't come here to live, "furtherers" moving in are ruining it for the locals.
