Right now we are living on Long Island, would like to go to Maryland, Annapolis Area (50 mile radius of) as daughter and grand kids are there.

Found a nice place called Symphony Village (over 55) in Centreville MD.  Anyone have any information on it.

Any thoughts appreciated

Does anyone have a list by state of requirements for and benefits of SSI, Medicaid, etc.?

Some examples:  when my late husband lived in CA, he got $235 SSI.  In New York State, he only got $36.  When we moved to AZ, it dropped to $19!  It'd be nice to know in advance, before moving, what the situation would be.

I currently live in Maryland and we were thinking about moving out of this state, especaily because taxes, property taxes and now we have these traffic control lights that are springing up all over Maryland.  I am a retired government worker, thus no Social security taxes taken, and maryland does not wave government retirement pension for paying taxes as it is currently done for those paying social security. . I've lived here all my life, so very comfortable but I can see why people don't want to move here, unless they are working here.  The traffic - well we are number one with traffic conjestion.

We retired where we have lived for 42 years..eastern Pennsylvania. Our property taxes are low (we live in a rural area) and PA does not tax SSA or our pensions. Situated where we are we are only 90 minutes from NYC or Philly which gives us the best of both worlds..(rural quiet and culture laden cities). Also 3 of our 5 children, 5 of our grandchildren and all 4 great grandkids live nearby. Twice we traveled across the country and back (and have been to Hawaii and Alaska) and though many of the places we visited (and have been mentioned here) are nice I would not live anywhere else but here.

I would have said California, after having have lived there for 19 years.  I got transferred to Texas back in the 1990's.  I cannot afford California any more, but I also cannot afford to live in Texas.  Yes, the houses are priced cheap, but I pay $500 a month for electricity during the summer, I pay at least $125 a month for a gardener.  I pay another $80 a month for water.  I pay around $3,000 a year each for property taxes and insurance, for a house I bought for only $103,000.  I am in semi-retirement and I can no longer afford what it costs to live in the state with the highest insurance prices and that deregulated electricity and has probably the highest electric rates in the nation as well.  Instead, I am planning to move to a mobile home in a senior mobile home park in Las Vegas, NV.  I expect to pay only $150 a month for total utilities during the summer since Nevada never deregulated.  The mobile home insurance is very, very inexpensive.  I would also not have to pay this crazy gardener, which also costs up to $500 for hedge trimming twice a year.  I can get a used mobile home very, very cheap, as low as $10,000, and bank the difference between what I can sell this house for and what the new one costs.  I also anticipate saving a lot of money on property taxes.  Yes, I will have to pay monthly space rent, but I will save money over all.  I would also no longer have a mortgage payment like I do here.  What money I save I can spend on entertainment and travel.  The climate is also more agreeable to my asthma since I cannot stand the humidity.  I will also be away from the huge hailstorms and tornadoes we have here in Texas.

Considering I live in NH and I'm retired, this is very good news.  We love it here and being near a lake and an hour or 2 from the ocean and major cities, what more could you ask for!!!!  Just wish the colder weather was shorter than the warmer temps, though.

Definitely NOT Florida  ! I can not wait to get out of this pitiful state. To those of you thinking of moving here. Think it out real careful if financial matters at all to you.

Home insurance in this state is three to four times what it is in many states, car insurance is double most states at best.
On the car insurance it is no surprise, pitiful drivers in this state with a very high accident percents. It's no wonder there are  more Attorneys in Florida than gas stations !I would highly recomend either of the Carolina's to live in. You have a change of seasons then instead of ten months of summer.

After 35 years in Alaska, we want the opposite and are planning on moving to Florida to an active adult community where there's no snow shoveling, driving on icy roads, and wearing big bulky clothing & shoes!  Picking the community Solivita as we have relatives there.  We visited and stayed with them.  Loved the community and the friendliness of residents.  Plus FL has no state income tax, easy access to cruises, and a major airport nearby.  A new hospital is planned right outside the gate of Solivita as well. We plan to rent 1st to see if we can take the humidity and heat.  If we can't, we'll pack our bags and move on.

My wife and I are seriously considering Portland, Oregon. The climate is moderate with mostly rainy winters, their public transit is second to none and cost of living is average with no state sales tax. Oh, and Oregon is BEAUTIFUL!!!
