The state is south of the Mason Dixon line - I leave it unnamed as we want people to come visit, we'll provide you a pleasant vacation, then go home.  But please don't come here to live, "furtherers" moving in are ruining it for the locals.

I agree with all those above--each area has it's benefits.  However in Central KY, we have sunshine nearly everyday.  Cost of living is low, the scenary is beyond beautiful.  We have a short, short winter; long spring, long fall.  I don't miss the heat of NC or the cold of IL.  This is a great country there are so many nice places to live and visit.

Where your family lives is always the best place to be.  I live in upstate New York.  Beautiful area with change of seasons and reasonable housing prices.  Property taxes are on the high side but income tax is very favorable to most of us on social security.

I retired last October. Bought a mobile home close to the Gulf in Florida in November. Stayed there from New Years until Easter...Next year I'll be gone from October to May , come back for Christmas to Minnesota. Otherwise, When it gets too hot and humid in summer, I live on a lake near the Twin Cities. Close to everything, but quiet and peaceful.
Plus, I get to go through some beautiful country driving there and back...Tennesee, Kentucky,Alabama and the Florida
panhandle. I hope to return Through Louisiana and Missouri next year. Always something to look forward to.

I am retired and live on the Central Coast of Ca. just north of San Luis Obispo.  We have the ocean close by, mountains and the desert a short drive away.  Housing prices are not near what they are in big cities.  I can walk to wine tasting from my house.

n Response to Re: Which state would you most like to live in during retirement? :  Hi. My name is Ron. We are planning now to retire to NC also. We have heard SC and VA are both better for retirees. Can you validate that? We want to live on a lake and GASTON looks very inviting and you can live in either NC or VA. We also love th Asheville area-it truly is one of our favorite spots in the US. Look forward to your response.

I lived in NC for 25 years.  (Charlotte).  The beaches and mountains are absolutely wonderful!  Charlotte, not so much.

I can't believe the people living here are really genuine if they want your money but want you to leave. No thanks. I guess I have to leave this state south of the mason dixon line a no go zone.

If your talking West Virgina Don't wory I would not want to move to a state where all they wanted was people to visit and take your money and get out. It is sad to know my father came from such a snobby state. At one point I did want to visit now I think will find some where else to leave my money.

We retired in Brunswick, Maine. We love the ocean, lakes and mountains. It has to be the most beautiful state in the US and most of the world. The people are fantastic, we have summer theater, hundreds of artists , the Portland Symphony, biking, hiking and numerous activities to do.
We could not be happier.
