Me, too. That's one of the most beautiful areas, regardless of the time of year!

I agree with Jackson10. While I'm not there yet. (still stuck in No California), I know that there is also a property tax break for those who have a small income, like Social Security alone. It makes California's Prop 13 look like a joke. So Washinton is where I hope to finally retire to. I'm on Social Security disability now, and believe me, California is Not where you can afford to retire. I've lived here all my life and can't wait to get out. The areas in Washinton are beautiful, and still within reach of Oregon and Northern California. The pace is slower, and that's what I like. Can't wait to retire up north. I'm considering the Vancouver area since I have friends who live in and around the Portland area. Oh, and no toll bridges. I won't miss that.

If you can afford it, Northern California, south of San Francisco, Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel.  One of the most beautiful places on earth.  In winter it's home to thousands of Monarch butterflies (just arriving now).

After living in California for 26 years, we began plotting our Great Escape from California two years ago.  We've lived on my retirement since I retired in September, 2009.  My wife retired in August and isn't drawing any retirement benefits yet.  FYI - 41% of my federal pension is tax free in Oregon.

We moved back to Oregon to be near family.  We had a custom home built on an acre we purchased.  We owe nothing on our homestead except for our annual property taxes.  We just got our property tax bill, it's a 1/3 of what we paid in the Bay Area.

We have a fantastic view of MT Hood.  Life is good!

We retired in Surprise, AZ -- NW Phoenix and OUT of those Scottsdale dust storms.  We're in Sun City Grand with 4 golf courses, awesome restaurants, pools and activities.  Low property taxes and absolutely awesome medical care and hospitals nearby truly enhance this location.  If one wants to cool off in the summer, it's an easy and breath-taking 2-hour drive to the high country (7,000-ft. level) -- or visit the snow sport areas in the winter -- or tour the fall colors.
Beattiful vistas, red cliffs and awesome sunrise and sunsets await...

Oregon and Hawaii... I have always lived my life as an either/and person. A bitter friend once said , "You want it all!" Funny thing is, I usually get what I want, and she never has. I have purchased a rural lot in beautiful eastern Oregon and will put a very modest but comfortable modular house on it. With a combination of solar and geothermal power, life there is very afforable. I also have my sights on a studio apartment in Honolulu. Again, that's amazingly affordable. I only own what I need and use, and I won't need a vehicle in Waikik, so I don't have a lot of baggage, literally or metaphorically! For me, the two state plan is the best of both worlds! Not having a rigid travel schedule makes getting back and forth doable. As usual, I'll have it all... Cool
