Washington.  It's a beautiful state with some vibrant big cities, lots of smaller cities, is on the Pacific Coast, and has the beautiful waterways and coastline of the Puget Sound.  We have two mountain ranges and lowlands in between.  We also have many islands with a ferry system serving them.  We have no state income tax and the cost of living is reasonable.  It's a very progressive state especially for women.  Currently we have a female governor, two female senators, and half of our supreme court is composed of women.  I also enjoy being on the west coast of the U.S. and within easy distance of Oregon and California.

The state is south of the Mason Dixon line - I leave it unnamed as we want people to come visit, we'll provide you a pleasant vacation, then go home.  But please don't come here to live, "furtherers" moving in are ruining it for the locals.

East TN . I say East TN ! Why ? It has the same climate as North Geroga. It stays warmer longer here. North Ga. even get snow and Ice storms when THE EAST TN VALLEY does not. The valley is huge. It is about about 27 miles wide, It is more then 150 miles long. It has a climate more like Atlanta Ga. Don't believe it . I have lived here 65 yrs. I know. It is center of Eastern U.S. and you can be anywhere in Eastern U.S. in about 5 to 7 hr.s It has cheap T.V.A. POWER. It has cheap taxes ,and nice homes and great interstate and rail, and air ports. So you can live like you got more then what you really have in East TN. Only East TN. No other like it anywhere.

Smokey mountain area.  Preferably, NC side.  My wife and I both love it!

SSol-Cal around the Carlsbad/Oceanside area where the season are great... after fifty years  there is no snow, freezing rain and scraping windows. Only little rain compared to the six to nine months of the stuff in the two state to the north. Cost are high but if you are ingenious and a coupon person, its not bad.  It's going to be a working kind of retirement but its fun.

PS. At least the traffic moves here and a dead stop is rare...Think of that when you are stuck on Hwy 26 or 217.  Helpful hint... challenge yourself and learn a foreign language like Spanish

I moved to a small town in Oregon (from northernCalifornia). The weather is quite similar and I can actually afford to live here.  In California the mobil home space rent was $1000 per month and would never end.  I'd have had to work til I died.   My mortgage and taxes on a nice little Victorian house in town are less than $800 per month.  When I pay off the mortgage next year, I'll be able to live on Social Security alone.   My 401ks will be for extras or emergencies.  That gives me a great sense of relief and satisfaction.  The beautiful green hills and rivers aren't too hard to take either.
