Insurance costs versus other costs of living

Greetings ...

This is my first post, and I hope I've placed it correctly on the message board(s).

My wife and I are extremely fortunate in that our medical needs are currently met by HMO insurance which is paid in large part by my public sector retirement package.  Though we have faced some medical challenges, our annual premium and copayments have been negligible.

We are, however, considering a move out of California, where we now reside.  If we move, we no long will be covered by the HMO and our annual premium and copayments will rise quite a bit under a new insurance plan provided by my retirement package.  That stated, our cost of living (especially housing) will fall dramatically.

I am interested to hear from others who have faced this decision, and also from anyone who might suggest ways to get guidance.  In essence, we face a trade off between higher medical care costs versus lower housing and other costs.  I suspect others have faced this decision too!

Many thanks, and best wishes ...
