How you can suggest any body should retire or even visit Belize is beyond reason. My wife and I spent four unforgettable days there last year and the poverty is overwhelming and beyond description..

Not that I'm suggesting it but it is the overwhelming poverty part that makes it attractive to some people.  Where poverty is rampant, prices are usually cheaper.  People living on just social security are sometimes interested in relocating to a place like that because their money goes a lot further than here in the good old USA.  I think there would be a downside to it myself like being so far away from family and always being an outsider.  But I guess I'd consider something like that if I were in dire financial straits here and thought I could improve my standard of living there.

I agree, why retire to Belize? It is poverty stiken and the people are desperately poor. But if you want to retire overseas then there are some great Central American counties with modern infrastecture and economies but they still have a much lower cost of living. Not only that but some have great retirement benefit schemes such as the "Pensionado Scheme" in Panama. The moden living standards and strong Panama economy all make for first world living standards. So don't be put off by 2 weeks in one country, you were just unlucky and picked the wrong one, there are plenty to choose from and they all have their pros and cons but I guess you know which one I decided on?
