In Response to Too young to retire, too old to find work!!!: This is the dillema.. I have been unemployed since 12/2010 and am finding it hard to get a job! I have some mobility issues so that accompanied by my age is making it next to impossible to find a full time job! I'm on my own so need to have a full time position lest I lost everything as unemployment is up in 5 wks. I have no options of moving in with family/friends around my area so the only option is moving to another state to live with a friend and her family, that way perhaps I can find something part time and still have a place to lay my head. But I truly don't want to have to do that. Never in a million years did I expect to be in this position.. but here I am. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! Posted by rainab55 Does AARP have a job-posting page? I need to hire someone and would gladly hire someone over 55 (I'm 62 myself).

Posted by rainab55 Sorry to hear of your dilemna. I obtained my present position 10+ yrs ago when at 62 I found myself in the same predicament. Attended computer classes at the local community college, registered at several temp agencies and two years later was hired where I still work at age 73. What really helps....and I mean this with a smile...your attitufe. It helps if you stop telling yourself what you can't do....and list the things you can do. Write a 'can do' list - read it daily and smile. Try to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. It takes practise and works most of the time. You are not alone. You will find a job!! Yes you can!! My thoughts and prayers are with you. You are as old as you think and as young as you feel. I stopped having birthdays and told my 45 year old daughter I decided to count backwards and when she is 55 I will be 63.

Posted by rainab55 Where about do you live and what do you have experience with? Because if you live in St. Louis or would like to move to St. Louis, check out my post called "Looking for work and over 50" or "Over 50 and lookiing for work". Eventhough I don't know you personally, but St. Louis does have places that will allow you to work. Kayak's coffee management states they want older workers and they seem to be having trouble finding some. |

Crazy isn't it.. I worked for a good company for quite a while till they closed their doors in 2010.. It took me over a YEAR to find another job.. People LEGALLY discriminate against us that are over 50.. I find it hard to work for people that are dishonest and keep my mouth shut.. *that is how I just recently lost my job* I now work Part time and am waiting to see if I am going to be sent to the next round for a good job. Let’s see how they react when I show up and am not as young as I sound on the phone. Wish me Luck. It not only pays well, It's right up my alley.
