I'm a woman over 50, with only a HS education. I haven't worked outside the home for over 25 years. It's been so long, I no longer have copies of my resume and I cannot remember every job I held. My skills were clerical based. The last time I held an office job, the computer and screen were hard-wired together. I'm now facing seperation/divorce after 30 years of marriage and an economy that is less than optimistic. Where do I start? I would be truly grateful any advice.

Create a resume with your name and conact info., the jobs you remember, the name of your high school, the skills you used, and you use a computer, so you can type. Maybe you are good at filing, answering phones. When asked why you haven't been in the workplace, say you were a stay-at-home mom or whatever, and "I'm ready to get back into the workplace, and these are my current skills. Perhaps some of those skills would meet your needs."

Sometimes you are asked for a cover letter (doesn't have to be long) where one usually elaborates a little on special skills you may have, or about your goals, or how you would be a positive choice for any employer. You can easily find styles for simple one-page resumes and one-page cover letters, on the internet or in the library, maybe here on AARP's website or links.

Also make a Master Application for yourself with all of your resume information (a resume is not an application and some places require both)  that you refer to when filling out an actual application at a prospective employer. The application is more detailed.

I'm not an employment professional, I'm a female, 65 and unintentionally unemployed and recently divorced.  I've at least done these things and if I do even a temp. job, I mention it in my resume/application. These are simple ideas for a start on your resume. Test your typing on web sites. Sign up at job boards on the web. Read the newpaper ads or the same ads are on the newspaper web site.Mail, email or fax your resume.  Hopefully you get a call to come in for an interview or to at least fill out an application. Good luck!
