Caucasian-Over 40 - No college degree - 30 years of Sales / Customer Service    I have had several interviews for jobs that I am over qualified for but I don't get the job. Employers always seem to select  younger and college educated with little or no experience. Maybe I should try to color my hair and see what happens.

Transition into entrepreneurship or as a trainer.  Go into the job interview as someone that can coach, mentor and train their organization.  Use your age and experience to your favor.

You go into the job interview with a defeat mentality or expectation -- you will get what you expect.
You go into the job interview with a winning attitude - you will get what you expect.

Go in with a wealth of knowledge in that position.  Share lessons learned in that area and how you would mentor or train others in that position.

Your confidence may lead you into a different position that you don't know about yet.

What have you got to loose?

In Response to Re: Too old for the job:
I have worked full time in HR Departments for various organizations for the past 10 years.  Ialso  have a small business where I help people write or rewrite their resumes.  Sometimes, to survive in the world of employment, we have to use our talents and skills in a new directions.  Such as, I used to work in an IT department for 22 years; with 8 years of computer operations and 8 years of programming.  But helping out the HR Department during busy times when they needed the help gave me enough experience to now work full time in HR when I couldn't find work in an IT Department.  We have to remember ALL of our talents and skills, not just those in one specific job area. Too old to work??  RUBBISH!!  Coffee shops are struggling to get more older workers.  Starbucks in the St. Louis area now have TWO people that over 50 and working away like mad!  At Mercy, we have a zero tollerance against discrimination in any shape or form.  I could remember when someone in surgery was terminated because of age, security found out and the person who did the terminating because of age got written up and was forced to call the older worker back to work!  Kayak's over on Skiner at the Forest Park Parkway could use some people in their 50s, and someone told me that they have trouble getting someone in their 50s clear all the way up to their 90s.  Now days, places of employment are prohibited from asking for the year you were born in.  Here is a link for someone that is ALWAYS hiring:

Now I found out what Hooters does, is that they have an emergency staff that the older workers are with.  And the older workers are called in when there is a shortage of young workers at a particular location.

I have looked for a job for years, went back to college to get a degree, pointless waste of time. During the last semester my teach told me in front of the class that I would never be able to find work that field. I graduated at the very top of my class, with high honors. I was very much disliked by the teachers, because my test scores were so high I blocked them from curing the grades for others. However the students always wanted help from me and would huddle around my desk every morning. Its heart breaking that a school would sell you three years of college and never tell you that you would never find a job in that career. I have received no support from the school what so ever, and if someone called the school they may give them a bad report about me. During one semester it was thought that I had turned in the head of the program in for stealing from the students, because she was selling donated books to the students. I had no way of know she was doing this but I caught the blame, I had noting to do with it, and I did not turn her in because I didn't know. I graduated in 2005 and I kept my licences for years but to this day I still wish to work as an optician somewhere. But no one will give me a chance, I need a lawyer to see if I can force my way in. I am not a corrupt person and I think this is why they don't want me in the field. There is huge profit in selling low-end (antiquated lenses) eyewear and less profit in high-end (state of the art lenses) eyewear. But I don't care anymore I will sell what every they want me to sell, even if the patients vision is impaired because it's an antiquated design high profit lens. What do you think?Spectacles are about fashion today, not about seeing the other car or the ice you are about to fall on. I am not a fashion model, but not bad for an old man, well I look real good for anyone past 45, I am 56.
