In Response to Re: Too old for the job:
YEP! We are. Actually if you working after 55 you are very lucky or very powerful (corp secrets will keep you safe for a while..until the next takeover or outsourcing...or ...) we need never ending "50+ targets and countermeasures" defenses.
In several ways I have been dealing with this all my life.  Under 50 I sold metal working equipment(old family business-very! erratic!..this is not a typo for 'erotic'..). to folks over 45-50 that had been retired for being too old and making too many enemies(probably!) and making too much money-' corp. cost cut targets'. I find 2 basic types of folks starting their own business: 1) desperate laid-off corp executives with a little savings (that they would never usually see again..after putting it "Into" the business)  and 2) folks  that are Sick-to-death of corp. robbery, or they have a record or some other skeleton.
We are all the first group without the money and ...we don't know how and don't want to start a company. It is very expensive........so.....

...do you (we) expect miracles? young people to hire old people??? Employment seems like a financial SS trap to me(2nd year of it).    Lets network our limited resources, or as I said in another thread: "Revolt-Boycott companies one at a time(this would take organization...any organizers?? out there...my ol'experience allies? or organize and exchange ideas of what the remaining US younger folks need from us.....and try to sell that product or service as simply as possible. Maybe another more popular site??(might not be only AARP folks...also foreign and domestic thieves.)

Caucasian-Over 40 - No college degree - 30 years of Sales / Customer Service    I have had several interviews for jobs that I am over qualified for but I don't get the job. Employers always seem to select  younger and college educated with little or no experience. Maybe I should try to color my hair and see what happens.

I think that age discrimination, work experience and education are working against us!  I got tired of applying for job after job, having great interviews, and no job offers!  Sometimes we have to take matters into our own hands... start your own business, work hard at it, and you will have success!  I recently started my own healthy chocolate business and I'm building a strong foundation for future residuals!  There are tons of network marketing companies out there with products and services for just about every interest.  Minimal investment and minimal monthly overhead make these businesses attractive.  Do the research and find the company, product or service you like and go for it!

Here's the company I joined... http://mxi.myvoffice.com/tamaradavis

Sometimes it is not our age that de-selects us during an interview.  After all if you got an interview then you did something right with the resume.  Sometimes it is attitude and how you present yourself.  Some people have an "old" attidute at 35.  I wish I knew the answer.

In Response to Re: Too old for the job: I am 70 years of age and spent all my adult life in sales. I have found that age is not an issue for certain sales positions. I have had no problem getting slaes positions for phone sales. I have been selling Mortgage Modifications for a marketing company for the past 2 years.

Just finished venting to my sister about my "part time" job at "HELLgreens" - (hired as cashier but duties include restocking shelves, cleaning - yes I have to bring my own cleaning rags- cleaning bathrooms, cleaning breakroom, vacuuming, "facing" all products, & selling "suggestive" sale items) when she told me about a program she saw that said the nicest, hardest working employees are treated the worst and paid the leas t. At 59 I was unable to find any secretarial work and the unemployemnet checks stopped coming -  then I read  this chain was senior friendly----only if you like 3 ten hour days in a row with the air conditioning "broken". Some nites I come home ready to cry - but remind myself that at least I have my minimum wage job...so much for the "Golden Years"

I did drive my auto to take my wife to her doctor, etc. .She is a resident of a home that takes care of old people, especially those who are infirm.     I need my auto, but cannot drive it because the State of South Dakota revoked my Drivers License.
I passed the driver's test in SD in March, 2011. I had a smalll colision in July 2011.  No personal injuries and the damages were all repaired at a cost of $223.00.  The State called me in for another driving test.  I did not pass and my license was revoked.  The State required a medical examination and a visual examination. I passed both of them. I took training from PhysicalTherapists- Occupational Therapists with special raining in teaching driving to handicaped individuals. Both of them recomended that I be given a second test and thought I would pass.despite my handcap, which they could not fix.  I am 91 years of age. My health is excellent and havo no medical problems.  I am begining to think i maybe descriminated against because of my age.  What can I do about it?  It is tough to prove, but it does exist.  Robert Rice, Phone 605-997-2104

I have been a retail store manager for 44 years and have always made a good living. Unfortunately, I did not plan for the future as well as I should have. Now, I depend on the Federal SCSEP program through Goodwill Industries for a minimum wage income to supplement my Social Security. I work / volunteer 15 hours a week for the state health department. I had a good job until 2009, but was terminated after an ilness when I could not return before the end of the FMLA. After a futile attemt to get my job back, I finally just gave up. I still have my retail talent, and now, better health but no one wants to hear about it.

I am in a similar situation. I have tried at least 4 resumes a day for the past three years. NOTHING!  I don't know if it  is my age or what. But I would love to be working! I am a  professional, a therapist with her PhD, and still nothing.

Boy do I hear youabout Golden Years...I lost my husband 1 year ago, not only my best friend of 50 years and mate of 47 years I lost 2000.00 dollars a month. We had bbought (still owed) a motor home for our Golden Years. Long story short they had to take back the motor home then sued me for the money so I was put into chapter13 and now working at a part time job for my food money..I am able to keep my SS and a part of his. I will be 70 in March and they expect me to do the work of a 30 year old. I am lonely and scared to "retire". They did allow me to keep the small life insurance he left me, but I am afraid to use it except for bills. I have been lied to so much that it is hard to believe anyone or anything. Dying my hair will not help my tireness. So like all seniors in my spot (and there are many of us) we suck it in and just keep going for as long as we can. I have thought of suicide, but just can't do that, they say get into a group for this depression, but when the meeting is over you still have to go home again.....

I understand what everyone here is talking about.  I recently lost my job, which I was dumb enough to think would last until I could retire at maybe 67 or 70.  I am 59.  I understand also the feeling of hopelessness because I still have bills to pay (like everyone else) and a home to maintain.  My only option is to lose everything and move in with one of my kids.  Now, that is something I NEVER wanted to do!  Why on earth would they want me in their lives daily?  I don't want to be a burden to them.  I am depressed and am taking medication and seeing a psychologist.  My case worker tellls me that the trend is towards companies hiring older workers but I haven't seen it and from all these posts, I have a feeling she needs to read these threads to see what others are feeling.  I have tried to find something I could do at home.  I have a computer and phone and still am very capable of dedicating myself to getting the job done well and efficiently.  But where do you find those kind of jobs?  I have read everything I can and called and talked to everyone, but I can't find any answers.  All of us "baby boomers" are now becoming a financial strain on the government but they sure liked our money while we were all gainfully employed.  One other thing, all the people that are telling me that "everything will be allright and it will all work out" aren't in my situation.  And I hope they never find themselves scared to wake up everyday and try to figure out how to survive when all we would like to do is work so we aren't a BURDEN or FINANCIAL STRAIN to anyone.  Bless everyone and I pray that we all find a way to take care of ourselves very soon.
