Thats because the younger, college group still lives with mom &/or dad and will work for much less than those of us who have the life experience and expect to be paid a living wage.

Employers always seem to select  younger and college educated with little or no experience. Maybe I should try to color my hair and see what happens.

Everyone here who is experiencing the same thing. loss of job, unsable to find any work should all be writting letters to their Senators and Congressmen. Our rperesentatives need to know that raising the age of Social Secuirty will only hurt those who are in your situation. Do not use email use regular mail as I know email will not be read but simply deleted.Always use hand written eddreses on the envelopes. Keep a copy and resend once a week. Tell eveyone you know to do the same.

Anyone know if there are 'legitimate' work from home jobs available?

I hope I can help. I have a blog on aarp and on blogger for people seeking work in midlife. There are industries more open to mature employees. Please either stop by my blog here or at:

http://workinglater.blogspot.com

I had to find a job at 47 for the first time in 18 years! That was 2004 and let me tell you--it was a humbling experience. Because I was an HR executive with hundreds of HR contacts and friends in my town I thought it would be easy. Boy was I wrong. Check out the blog, comment, visit. I hope to hear from you.

Since you have some much sa;es experience, have you given the thought to working for home in the sales industry?

I am over qualified for most jobs and they never even call back the ones that do keep saying why are you appling here and I tell them I just want a job any job but my last job thought I wanted their job and finally found a way to fire me. I don't qualify for unemployment and were just getting by, Now what? My husband has a job but it doesn't cover everything. I have a gold coin that I am thinking about selling but the price of gold is down also I just need something to get me by for a year then I can get my SSI at 62. you are right that no one wants to hire someone who is older and experienced they would rather hire someone fresh out of school that they can pay less. But from what I've seen those young people don't have the same work ethic.

It's tough in this economy and it's going to get even tougher unfortunately.  Have you considered working for yourself?  You have a lot of sales experience and there's probably a great way to leverage that experience and make as much money as you want to make.

You may want to explore your options as a business owner.  It sounds more involved than it is really.  The tax benefits and the income potential of a home business will combine in order for you to maximize the return on your investment.

There are some great opportunities that will allow you to make money right away.  "Out of the box" is what someone referred to them.  You don't need to create a product or service.  Just follow the training that is provided.  And it doesn't matter if you're over 50.  As a matter of fact, older people tend to do better with one business in particular.

Let me know if you would like more information.

I will be 60 in October.  I have been unemployed since March.  What's really distressing is applying for jobs like a cashier in a video store, or hardware store, and not even getting a call.  I live in Washington state, in a place where my profession as a pharmacy tech is not needed.  So, I am willing to take ANYTHING.  I have no insurance, and thank GOD that right now I have enough prescription medication to get me thru to January.   But after that.....
