Caucasian-Over 40 - No college degree - 30 years of Sales / Customer Service    I have had several interviews for jobs that I am over qualified for but I don't get the job. Employers always seem to select  younger and college educated with little or no experience. Maybe I should try to color my hair and see what happens.

Go for it. Do whatever it tskes. Consider yourself lucky some do not even get interviews. Some say retirement age should be raised to 70 like employers will keep older people emloyed that long.
good luck

Reply: Boy do I understand that although I am 60 and feeling it so much. I have colored my hair, lost weight, and in better health today than I was in my 30's and yet still nothing. Where do we go , what do we do, how do we support ourselves. I mean here we are, now what?

Some folks will never be able to collect more than 2-5 years after paying in for 30-40 years. Looks like Washington is trying to balance the budget with Social Security. There too many disability recipients leeching off the system that are in fear of drug testing. I used to work at a pharmacy and have seen the type of people feeding at the public trough. On Fridays more "diabetic syringes" were sold than insulin. I could charge 5 times the price and still sell them as fast as they could drive up to the window. And nothing like having to be nice to someone complaining about a 2 dollar copay with a case of beer and carton of smokes in the back seat.

You are never too old. Recently, PBS aired a documentary, 90 Years Old & Loving it. It was terrific. I have a link to it on my blog for mature workers.

I hink that employers do not want to hire older people like us but are careful in how they say What businesses hire someone  over 50?

AI l  I can say is that goodness that my husband has a good job right now! But who knows about tomorrow, it may
be gone. I've applied for unemployment for the first time in my life and waiting for a check.

Totally uncertain of what's ahead - after years of good money management raising a family I find myself alone and practically broke with nobody to rely on. Some reward for a job well done! Who hires women age 64 in this economy?

Everyone here who is experiencing the same thing. loss of job, unsable to find any work should all be writting letters to their Senators and Congressmen. Our rperesentatives need to know that raising the age of Social Secuirty will only hurt those who are in your situation. Do not use email use regular mail as I know email will not be read but simply deleted.Always use hand written eddreses on the envelopes. Keep a copy and resend once a week. Tell eveyone you know to do the same.

Just finished venting to my sister about my "part time" job at "HELLgreens" - (hired as cashier but duties include restocking shelves, cleaning - yes I have to bring my own cleaning rags- cleaning bathrooms, cleaning breakroom, vacuuming, "facing" all products, & selling "suggestive" sale items) when she told me about a program she saw that said the nicest, hardest working employees are treated the worst and paid the least. At 59 I was unable to find any secretarial work and the unemployemnet checks stopped coming -  then I read  this chain was senior friendly----only if you like 3
ten hour days in a row with the air conditioning "broken". Some nites I come home ready to cry - but remind myself that at least I have my minimum wage job...so much for the "Golden Years"
