OMG! Lucky you ! New Orleans is a great city. Unlike any other. Just take time and  enjoy the French Quarter. All the quaint shops, the artists, the entertainers, the most wonderful food and the atmosphere. The people are friendly, the music will suck you into the most wonderful places. The Funky Pirate if Big Al and his wonderful Blues Band are playing is the most fun you will ever have.
There are toursof the Garden District and other historical areas, the making of the Mardi Gras floats, the bayous and back roads are awesome to see.
Enjoy it all !

Preservation Hall is living history--so wonderful.  You stnd in line to get in, then stand in back until a seat becomes available, but it is worth every minute.  Close your eyes half way and picture Louis Armstrong playing.  It is all so cool

Many years ago my husband and I stopped over in New Orleans on a drive across country. I think we were there for less than 24-hours, it was a whirlwind visit and such a treat, and a much-needed layover. All we had time for was a walk around the French Quarter (including an impromtu palm reading), a little music and some classic gumbo. Wouldn't hesitate to return someday for a more extended visit.

We walked Bourbon Street from Canal to St Ann and stopped in many great music and food places...Oceana had great charbroiled oysters and people were lined up at Acme to get oysters...we enjoyed several music stops including the Funky Pirate and Fritzels...we were there over Christmas and learned to eat at the smaller restaurants and really enjoyed the great seafood. We went to New Orleans School of Cooking on St Charles and learned about Gumbo and Jambalaya...a fantastic location all around and worth many more visits!!!

Get out of the French Quarter and take the st. Charles street car to Audubon Park, and spend some time strolling among its lush landscape.  Then walk through the "Garden District" which is across Audubon Park to see some of the city's most beautiful homes.  Get back on the street car and stop at Camelia Grill for the best pecan pie with french vanilla ice cream.  Back in town, get some beignets at Cafe du Monde with a cup of chicory coffee with lots of sugar and cream.  Gotto take the Natchez paddle wheel boat for a ride down the Mississippi for a real feel of the river.
There are tours to the bayou country but I think it would be more fun to rent a car and stop along the way for some Shrimp boil at quaint country diners.  And don't miss the Destrahan Plantation where indigo was grown in 1787.

there

New Orleans is a GREAT city! The food is amazing and the architecture very interesting! We took several tours while we were there, including a culinary history tour in the French Quarter, the walking tour of the Garden District and Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. We also took a swamp tour and a tour of a couple of plantations. Aside from that, we spent a lot of time listening to the music in the French Quarter and enjoying the culture of this wonderful city...ENJOY!

Getting away from Hurricane Charlie, my roommate and I ended up in New Orleans.  We had a great time and we both loved the night scene.  We were able to enjoy a parade in the middle of October.  I thought I was in a Mardi Grad parade.  People were lovely and the ambience perfect.

French Quarter was fantastically interesting.  We stopped to eat at a French Restaurant, and I had my first gumbo ever.  It was delightfully delicious.

I sure hope to go back someday and stay in one of those old hotels or residents on Bourbon Street where several Hollywood films of the 50s and 60s were made.
