Our two most memorable vacations have been to Alaska and to French Polynesia.  We spent two weeks in Alaska visiting Denali National Park and then cruised the Inside Passage to Vancouver.  See Alaska while you can. Our changing environment is taking its toll.  We spent two weeks cruising French Polynesia, (Tahiti, Bora Bora, et al), crossed the equator to Christmas Island and then on into Hawaii for several days.  We want to take a Norwegian cruise next to see the Aurora Borealis ("northern lights") and are considering the Olympic games in Rio in '16.

All spots are very good but there are some places which are really good for you. I like some places in Europe and some places in Australia but my memorable vacation spots are Caribbean. I like all Caribbean islands for my vacations.

New Zealand, all of it. Looking for volcanoes, rain forests, fjords, wine country, geysers, sulphur springs, ,mirror lakes? New Zealand has them all! Plus friendly people, delicious food, uncrowded roads, fabulous vistas around every bend. It's where the Australians go on vacation. And, if you're a Lord of the Rings fan, you'll know immediately why they filmed it in New Zealand. It's worth the long trip. You will never forget your time here. Nowhere else will you see glow worm caves, Maori villages, kiwis, and millions of sheep. Go!

In 1993, my then gentleman friend (now husband) and I spent a month in New Zealand. Three weeks, on a tour that had only 6 tourists and 3 guides on the South Island and one week, self guided tour, on the North Island. Everything we saw was fabulousand we got to spend a few days in the home of a resident of NZ. It was wonderful to see the night sky with different constellations from what we were used to seeing (on the few a occasions that we could see a good night sky here in the NE part of the US). Everyone we met seemed to be a tour guide and the people were so friendly and helpful.
In 2001, we spent a week backpacking on Isle Royale, the National Park in Lake Superior. It wasn't empty of people, but you could go a long way without spotting any, and moose were everywhere.
Both of these vacations were wonderful and we made many lovely memories.

In Response to Re: Has anyone travelled to Costa Rica:
I have heard a lot of good news about retiring in Costa Rica.  I don't know how true it is.  I would appreciate any feedback from our fellow retirees.  Thank you and happy retirement folks!

If you're considering Costa Rica don't forget to check out Boquete & Volcan Panama. I was there last year with my Panamanian wife and fell in love with the place. And they have some of the best coffee on the planet. About 4 months from now I'm gonna be moving there.

These are all good ideas. New Zealand sounds interesting. Has anyone tried the Road Scholar trips? They used to be Elderhostel.   They have an interesting trip to Australia/New Zealand

They used to be a very inexpensive way to travel. Are they still inexpensive? Anyone know?

I fly via float plane into remote lakes in nortwest Ontario, Canada. The lakes, wildlife, woods, rivers, waterfalls, and of course fish make for an incredible trip. I have done this every summer since 1989 and never grow tired of these trips.

All my travels have been memorable.....love the Adirondacks in the fall, and Indian Lake where we rent a lovely lake house sometimes.....
Never tire of St.John in the U.S Virgin Islands..St.Lucia was a great place to visit...made better by my daughters wedding there last April :)
Florida and Hawaii....just didn't really care for too much.....love the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.
Heading to Playa del Carmen and Cozumel in July and going all out and breaking the bank on a $30,000 a week villa on Barbados next year during Crop Over.....splitting the cost with a few other couples so it won't be so bad....Travel is what we enjoy and where our extra money goes :)
